A quick question for those in the know...

My dog destroyed my CD drive tray this weekend, and I'm looking to replace the drive. I'd had 2 drives until that point, an 8/4/32 CDRW, and the now-busted 40x CD. I had been debating whether or not to pick up a Pioneer DVD-106S for two reasons: 1) it's a DVD drive, and 2) it's slot-loading, which just plain looks cool. I now have reason 3, which is that Barky McBreaksmydrive won't bust the tray when I have it open for some reason. I'd be interested in knowing if there are any other slot loading drives (CD, DVD, or recordable CD -- I just want to weigh options) out there, because I'm having a rough time tracking them down. As far as I can tell, Pioneer is the only brand that manufactures the slot-loading drives, but that just doesn't sound right, there's got to be other drives out there.

Although I wouldn't mind hearing SCSI solutions, I'd prefer to steer clear of SCSI drives, simply because I have no SCSI ports. :)

Thanks, all!

I broke down & ordered the 106S from MWave last week, and the thing looks sleek & works perfectly. If you don't have one, get one, simply cause it looks great. And, a runaway dog won't smack into the tray & break it off, cause there *is* no tray.

I also picked up one of these while I was ordering...it's a great convenience to have ports in the front of your PC (at the very least you don't have to go digging underneath a desk in the back of your tower looking for ports), and the temperature sensor is a nice addition as well.

Im jelous, ive wanted that drive for quite some time now. Mabe Ill go and get it soon, like after I make some money.

I've had the 303S for over 2 years. Still one of the best drives I've used. Only differences are that it's SCSI, and it maxes out at 6x. Almost made me get rid of my Plextor SCSI CD-ROM, but the 303S doesn't handle sub-channel reading for CloneCD, while the Plextor does.
