so what are you thinking right now?

even though we went to private school we did speech therapy in the public school

in MY district ehhhhhhhhh it was okay--we have friends who paid $$ for a private tutor through St Xavier they had GREAT results

if I was ever to do it again I would go to the colleges

that is just MY opinion

He gets 45 mins. a week at school. He has a very high non-verbal IQ, so I want his language to keep pace with his capabilities. I also worry about how the language disorder will affect his reading comprehension and to a degree his social interaction. Kids one and two grades older than him realize that something is a little off with him.

We are debating on having DD3 got to speech therapy. We utilize Parents as Teachers and they have seen no real concerns and her 3 day a week play school instructor hasnt said anything either, but there are clear blends she has trouble with and gets frustrated when corrected as she cant do it the right way. Can I ask when is your sons Birthday? My DD3 turned in July, she was also a little slower to speak, but always had enough words for the minimum words expected for her age. Now her vocabulary is great, her sentence structure is great, but it is the ability to pronounce words that is a concern.

oh my 15 year old still has speech issues--if he THINKS and concentrates he can make all the sounds--he is just too lazy to do it all the time :( I think it has totally hurt him socially
 
Children at age 3 often have issues w/blends, that is part of normal development at that age...if others aren't noticing her speech as being an issue then I wouldn't worry about it Mrs.Melton. If you are really concerned you could call your local school district and set up a free evaluation but if she is speaking that well then I wouldn't be too concerned. HTH
 
To those of you who have kids with speech problems - have you checked to see if they are tongue tied? I know that they say it doesn't impact speech, but it does for me and I can still hear my dad saying "enunciate your words, we can't understand you".

There are some words I just can't say and there is no hope of me properly rolling r's for Spanish, but if I get tired I start to slur, almost like I've had a little bit to drink.

There is surgery to fix it, but I've lived with it this long that I'm old and set in my way, but maybe something to look at for the young ones.
 
I had my ds checked out--was actually hoping for it

he is my baby and the others had zero issues-maybe because he was/is the baby others spoke for him too much?? but he drops of ending sounds ALL THE TIME

I will now say to him--spell that word for me--see there's an S or a D etc.. at the end of it--you have to say it!!

:hiphip: Thanks so much! I don't know why I didn't think of this having an education degree and all. :dunce: One of the universities I called has a group setting that he can start with in the spring semester and they have individual sessions, but have a waiting list for them.

If the 45 min is insufficient to meet his needs, ask for more!

Thanks, I think it is nothing to worry about sometimes, but with DD2 speaking so much clearer it makes us really notice more. We are obviously trying not to compare, but don't want to wait to long if there is an issue if that makes sense.

for both of the toddlers, I still have to translate for DH :lol:
 
Heading to lunch with my boss/ company CEO... Have not had a formal meeting with him for 2+ years, thus no raise in that timeframe ... Hoping for a nice boost.

Thoughts/prayers appreciated.

He's pretty laid back and am not expecting surprises... Still nervous....

I would highly recommend taking your DD to be evaluated. In both IL and MO they have programs that are designed to evaluate children preschool age or younger, so I am sure that IN has something similar. Google the school district and look for the preschool/early childhood center phone number. If it is found that she has a speech issue, you can get services outside of the school day where you take her to the school just for speech or there would be an option to send her there for preschool and she would have services while she was there.

DS is 4 and his birthday is in May. He does have problems with some of his sounds, but the ones that he mostly has trouble with he isn't supposed to develop until he is in the 6,7,8 age range. His disability is with receptive and expressive language.

:flowers: Went well. He was friendly, listened and gave me some good info about the future of the company.

He said I'll get a "bump" in my next paycheck. Who knows what that means......<crossing fingers until 11/15>
 
Mrs. Melton we have the same issue happening in our house. DS3 had speech therapy in home from 18 months-3 years old. He started in the "At Risk" Pre-K program at school in August, goes 4 half days a week. They have evaluated his speech and at this point isn't receiving any therapy at school. He is vocal enough but his blends are horrible to understand but that is appropriate for his age. DS2 is also easier to understand so that can be a frustrating piece. DS3 will be turning 4 next week and is scheduled to be re-evaluated for speech services in January. The teachers all said they have no problem understanding him, yes, their are some areas that don't come out clear but they all believe that it will come with age. So I'm just watching it closely and can spot small changes just since starting school.

I already did at the IEP meeting. However, I don't want him to miss what goes on in the classroom either, because I feel that is important too. It is a catch 22. In all reality, my son is not severe, so they feel what they is giving him is appropriate.

I have the mentality of "fixing" everything while he is young. I have been to several of his language sessions while I have volunteered at his school and I think they are doing a great job with him, I just don't know how much he is learning. I work on using prepositions with him at home aka--"The hat is on my head." But he will say, "The hat is IN my head." He has worked on prepositions so many times, but still doesn't get it.

The pediatrician thought that he probably didn't need additional services and I talked to his SLP and she said that she wouldn't recommend outside services. I am of the mindset though, that I want to give him as much language immersion as possible now since this is when they are learning the most. I don't want him to struggle throughout school if there was something additional I could have done. I am a very type A personality and I want my son to do well.

I also fear that the language issue will carry over into the social aspect and he will have a hard time making friends or obtaining or maintaining a job. My brother who has a brain tumor and has always struggled to make friends and is struggling with something realistic to major in. He is "smart" like my son and earned his associates, but there are other issues he has associated with the tumor including language and there are no services at his age to help him since he doesn't have severe problems.
