"We contend that for a nation to try to tax itself into prosperity is like

a man standing in a bucket and trying to lift himself up by the handle."

Winston Churchill

SOCIAL SECURITY:

Franklin Roosevelt, a Democrat, introduced the Social Security (FICA)

Program. He promised:

1.) That participation in the Program would be completely voluntary,
2.) That the participants would only have to pay 1% of the first $1,400
of their annual incomes into the Program,
3.) That the money the participants elected to put into the Program
would be deductible from their income for tax purposes each year,
4.) That the money the participants put into the independent "Trust Fund"
rather than into the General operating fund, and therefore, would only
be used to fund the Social Security Retirement Program, and no other
Government program, and,
5.) That the annuity payments to the retirees would never be taxed as
income.

Since many of us have paid into FICA for years and are now receiving a
Social Security check every month -- and then finding that we are
getting taxed on 85% of the money we paid to the Federal government to "put away," you may be interested in the following:

Q: Which Political Party took Social Security from the independent
"Trust" fund and put it into the General fund so that Congress could spend it?

A: It was Lyndon Johnson and the Democratically-controlled House and
Senate.

Q: Which Political Party eliminated the income tax deduction for Social

Security (FICA) withholding?

A: The Democratic Party.

Q: Which Political Party started taxing Social Security annuities?

A: The Democratic Party, with Al Gore casting the "tie-breaking" deciding

vote as President of the Senate, while he was Vice President of the U.S.

Q: Which Political Party decided to start giving annuity payments to

immigrants?

MY FAVORITE:

A: That's right! Jimmy Carter and the Democratic Party. Immigrants moved into this country, and at age 65, began to receive Social Security
payments!

The Democratic Party gave these payments to them, even though they never paid a dime into it! Then, after doing all this lying and thieving and violation of the original contract (FICA), the Democrats turn around and tell you that the Republicans want to take your Social Security away!

And the worst part about it is, uninformed citizens believe it!

Hear, hear! And members of the AARP think they are informed. When I was self-employed I paid just over double what folks see coming out of their checks. And every year it's more then double what I pay in income tax. Sure wish all that was invested instead of depreaciating for all these years.
It's time for reform. I only hope the Dems don't get the whitehouse back next election. Or we may as well just sign over two or three paychecks a month to the g'ment.
I don't know how anyone can afford to raise kids now a days. Unless, of course, you're letting the "dole" do it for you with our money.

Well, I certainly learned something today!! Thank you, Ken. I knew So-so Security has been being wasted and drained, but never knew which group did it--I always assumed it was both Republicans and Democrats.

What gets my goat is that Social Security has strayed so far from its original purpose. True story--I once knew someone who was getting SS because he was a drug and alcohol addict. He actually had the nerve to say that MY government was funding his habit, and why should he get a job and quit poisoning himself?? He said he was getting paid to party. He was quite proud of himself.

Another case was when my brother in law died, leaving a 10 year old. Her SS benefits were quadruple what he paid in child support, and both her mom and stepdad had great paying full time jobs. Yes, its tragic that a child is left fatherless, but in my humble (and probably wrong) opinion, his child support should have been only replaced, or even doubled, not quadrupled!! This child needs no financial help!!

Worst of all, my grandfather was a millionaire way back when that term meant very, very rich. (no, none trickled down, he lived to be 96 and had 5 kids...!) When he was eligible for "rockin'chair money", he told SS that he didn't need it or want it. They insisted on giving him the checks anyways--there was no way he could NOT collect SS. He donated each and every check to charity.

I'm sure the founders didn't plan on funding people who do not need SS--also sure they had no idea folks would be living past their seventies. It needs to be fixed!!

as a matter of fact when SS was set up, the age was truthfully set about 10 years past the average life expectancy of the time, it wasn't meant to be paid out at all. Unless i am misinformed, SS is nothing more than a Tax that has changed form, only they forgot to up the age for drawing your SS checks as the average life expectancy grew. so now, it IS being used as a retirement savings... ponder that one.

5.) That the annuity payments to the retirees would never be taxed as
income.

And that is the BIGGEST bunch of horse hockey!!!

Dh and I have to declare MY SSDI every year as TAXABLE INCOME!!!! I get it because I am disabled. And yet I have to pay taxes on it just like regular income. :mad0260: Makes absoulutely NO sense whatsoever! Liz

Liz, do you also lose it if you have any other kind of income? For instance if you start a business as a self-employed thing..
It's a rip-off for sure.. Somehow the g'ment always manages to find ways to tax our money twice too. Cap gains? Inheritance tax? Even tax refunds are a rip, cause they sit on "our" money all year. No interest.

BD, I get to earn up to a certain amount before I lose it. And being self employed, we can always claim the income as dh's instead of mine. But eventually, yes, it will cost me my SSDI but I hope by then it won't matter cause we will have enough income coming in to completely replace what I bring in from SSDI anyway. Liz

when the Gov't was set up, except in times of war, the states were to have the power, not the Fed. Each state was supposed to be independantly strong yet unified... you were to pick your choise in land and Gov't based on what state had the most in common with your views... yet now with all the taxes we allow the fed to take, we have funded them into power... an BIG power...
The chances of me seeing anything out of SS are slim to none, yet i pay it every week... income tax - what a joke! and taxing Inheritance!!!!!!!!! COME ON... our dearly departed already paid 1. sales tax, 2. income tax, 3. SS tax 4. if they've worked in recent years, Medicare taxes and any other state and local taxes...

SS, i'll never see it but i HAVE to pay it. and i'll be taxed on that tax later if i do.

medicare - NC is now the WORST state for illegals - we have more border jumpers living off of our welfare and getting free healthcare in this state and it's growing faster than any other state... even Texas and California... and can i say it's easier for an illegal to get a Drivers License in this state than it is for Leah to change hers from Kansas.

i say it's time to get rid of these Politicians!!! put Bubba and Joe Shmoe blue collar workers in office that know what it is to sweat out a days pay to see it chopped up and handed out to every politicians pocket before he can even take whatever's left home for diapers and formula... and who know what it's like to need SS to work... who know what it's like to have thier job sent overseas... or how much illegal labor hurts...

He's not kidding either... 2 years later and I still have Kansas driver's license simply because of how difficult it is here... Of course I have to change it sometime this year, as my Kansas one expires... It's so bad here that I even changed my name on my Kansas one last time I was there so that I'd have it and could change my name at the banks finally...

I personally don't understand the way social security is set up. Too many people out there collect it that don't deserve it, and then there are others that deserve it that can't get it. The g'ment has totally screwed this up and made it to where it hurts the poorer population of the US, which of course makes it to where they don't really care to do anything to fix it.

I had a wallpaper customer years back. She and her husband had just sold their Toyota dealership for $23 Mil. I thought she would break her leg getting to the mailbox for her SS check. And another thing, she was one of only 3-4 people in 18 years who stiffed us on payment. That ole witch still owes me $180!!!:mad0245:
The people that need it the most, see the cost of living raise taken right back by MediCare. Yet Washington gets their full raises every time it's brought up.

lol i'd go get your $180 out of her garden!

Not one of these taxes existed 100 years ago and our nation was the most prosperous in the world, had absolutely no national debt, had the largest middle class in the world and Mom stayed home to raise the kids.

What the hell happened ??

more food for thought.

Mandatory insurance, (indirect tax) In Michigan, we pay $72 extra if we don't carry health insurance. Well, I was being charged that fee for both cars I owned. Hellooooo, I can only drive one at a time!

City tax.

Ever notice all the taxes on your phone bill. I was paying $33 a month for service that SBC had listed at $16.

i wish that something could be done, i'm sick of paying all these taxes...

i'm tired of never having a decent candidate for any office!
i'm tired of being tired.

Oh Boy I know that phone bill tax!!!! Ridiculous. We pay $14.99 (no bells or whistles like call waiting or id) and the total is $29.85--and I noticed that the last bill from Verizon has a $5 late fee listed!!! Used to be a percentage. $5!! I'm too cheap to even pay the 1.5% late charge. Think there's taxes on cable, too...

two words... "Taxes SUCK" sorry... but growing up is hard enough... and realizing how much of my HARD EARNED WAGES go to taxes is enough to dishearten anyone!

Social Security's Sham Guarantee

by Michael D. Tanner

Michael Tanner is director of the Cato Institute's Project on Social Security Choice.

How many times during the recent debate over Social Security reform have you heard someone refer to Social Security's "guaranteed benefit"? The AARP says "Social Security is the guaranteed part of your retirement plan." Nancy Pelosi, the Democratic leader in the House, touts the system's "guaranteed retirement benefit." The liberal activist group ProtectYourCheck.org, headed by former Clinton chief of staff Harold Ickes, is running ads calling Social Security "a guarantee you earned."

But Social Security benefits are not guaranteed.

They are not guaranteed legally because workers have no contractual or property rights to any benefits whatsoever. In two landmark cases, Flemming v. Nestor and Helvering v. Davis, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that Social Security taxes are not contributions or savings, but simply taxes, and that Social Security benefits are simply a government spending program, no different than, say, farm price supports. Congress and the president may change, reduce, or even eliminate benefits at any time.
