Okay, I'm trying to finish off the home theater in my parents' living room, all the equipment is there, I just need to mount the surround speakers. The only problem is the odd shape of the room:

Since the television is in the corner of the room (there's a sliding glass window to the left so it couldn't go against the wall), I can't get a perfect rectangular speaker range. I'm thinking about putting the left surround speaker over the couch on the bottom of the picture (just a little above the word "half-wall") and the right surround between the end table and smaller couch.

I'm curious to see if anyone has any better suggestions? Thanks.

Are you wall-mounting them, or standing them on speaker stands?
If you're wall-mounting, you'd probably do best to mount one to the wall above and behind the endtable, and the other above the sub on the half-wall.
If you're using stands, you can pretty much place them anywhere.

Unfortunately, the ideal viewing location is right smack between the 2 couches, so you're never going to get an ideal sound field with the room arranged the way it currently is.

They'll actually be ceiling mounted since that half-wall only goes about a foot higher than the couch does.

The surrounds are tall and thin with two side-firing speakers on each side (see System9000 for a picture of the speakers).

The continuing issue that's going to impede your enjoyment of the home theater setup is that, no matter where you sit in that room, you're going to be significantly closer to one speaker than you will be to another.
There's no seating anywhere that can be a potential sweet spot.
You're going to be doing a lot of volume balancing because of the way the couches are positioned. And as soon as you sit somewhere else, the sound is unbalanced again.

Hmmm I'm agreeing with Diesel Dan on this one. One thing I might suggest is if you have a tendancy to sit on one couch over the other put both speakers around that couch so one is more for entertainment. The one problem is if you have guests and they sit on the other couch the sound won't be as good.

In either situation, the sound won't be ideal, but it's another idea :)
