Spidey,

I have an older model Pioneer (DV-414), and I am happy with it. A buddy of mine has the DV-333, and it does a great job. All of the basic features. Anyway. Good luck to you. I'd say all of the ones Poss and DD mentioned are good.

Toshiba and Panasonic are really good brands whose models are all available at decent prices.
Sony is also good, but cost much more.

Depending on the level of home theater is expected to be around the DVD player, you should probably make sure the player supports DTS decoding, and has component video outputs.

I have an older model Toshiba (SD-2109), which has since been replaced by the SD-1200, and has since been replaced by the SD-1600. Very nice player for the money.
While some places have it slightly cheaper, Outpost.com has it for $199 with free overnight shipping.
Check the usual price search engines (Pricewatch, Pricegrabber, etc.).

As much as we don't like to plug other forums, you *might* want to check out discussions at the DVD Coupon Post and at DVD Talk as they've got a lot of hardware discussion being bantered about.

I have an APEX AD-600A - plays DVDs, CDs, VCDs, CD-Rs, CD-RWs, and will even play back MP3s burned onto a CD-R/RW. I've only had two problems with it - the remote cut out on me once (it's better now of its own accord) and it wouldn't play my copy of The Patriot. I like it - it's cheap, it's easy to use, it's got some decent features, and my model has a "hack" that allows you to disable MacroVision and to make the player a region-free player.

On the downside, my player lacks really top-notch audio & video output. For my needs, that's ok, as I don't have the best TV or stereo out there.

I have a Sony DVP-S725D and am more than happy with it, DD is correct though, they are very expensive, luckily I know someone who worked for Sony so got it at almost half the store price.

The LG 3200E is a good budget buy and can be hacked to multi region by using just a code.

I have a Toshiba 2109 and that also won't play CD-Rs, or at least the ones I have tried. I definitely recoment Toshiba or Panasonic. Make sure you get one that can play video-cds, and CD-Rs if you feel you might want to play these.

If you need a dvd player that has Dolby Digital or DTS decoding then Panasonic has the DV60 and DV80 (60 being DD and 80 being both DD and DTS) for reasonable prices.
