well.. one of the mainstays in our computing enthusiast circle shutting down. They're citing lack of funds as the reason.

They were like the only site that tried to do decent HD reviews and had collected a pretty decent sized database. Hope someone can get all that from them and keep it on the web or something.

I'm shocked to hear of this. SR is a great site.

Oddly, there's no mention of this on SR's site.
They do mention a catrostrophic event which resulted in the total and irretreivable loss of their database, which could certainly hinder things, and could cause many companies to go under.

However, they don't mention anywhere that I could see that they were closing up shop.

Got a link?

i read about it on arstechnica.com was a news post on their main pg.

StorageReview shutting down 1/28/02

UN1Xnut of the Lounge reports that one of the best online resources covering magnetic and optical storage devices, StorageReview.com, is going offline January 28. Once again, financial problems are to blame.

SR has been losing serious money since February when MaximumPC and Ecrix bailed on us. We have burned through our business then personal savings and we’ve been taking cash advances on our credit cards to pay the bills and keep the dream of SR alive. We were hoping there would be light at the end of the tunnel, but this tunnel is a cave. My mortgage is due in two weeks and I pay to keep SR running. At this point it is irresponsible of me to keep this site around despite the pure dedication and love that went into crafting it for 4 years.

It's still strange, to say the least, that SR would be so open and candid with their readers about losing a database, but wouldn't mention anything about shutting down for good.

I would imagine Ars would have verified that story 3 times over before running it on their main page, but my spider-sense is telling me that something's amiss. ;)
