Taxable e-commerce

Well I already pay tax on most of the stuff I order online...but I really think it should be just like mail order, you only pay tax if the company has a physical presence in your state.

but I think it's time for a national salestax. I would give a portion of the proceeds to the states where the individual who ordered the goods lives. The balance I would use to raise the standard deduction and lower income taxes.

Interesting Orion...you're right in implying that its time for creative solutions to long-standing problems... If you were to impose a national tax however, how would that money be disseminated in correct proportion, as you said, with respect to where the purchaser lives? The trouble with federal level things is that it seldom works out that way...

Excellent point, KNS, and you just touched on one of the biggest reasons that I am a Republican....they tend to shy away from things at the federal level more than Democrats....but that's a whole other can of worms. I have no problem with sales tax so long as it's fair and the proceeds go to the correct proportions of population and need (combined).

My biggest gripe about sales tax is that why can't it be displayed with the price of merchandise? This would help the consumer better calculate costs when shopping.
