WASHINGTON, Oct. 3 It can coil like a cobra or switch like a sidewinder, but it isn’t a snake. It’s a snakebot, a long, thin, segmented robot meant to help explore space, NASA said Tuesday.
THE ROBOTIC SERPENT could be ready for space travel in five years, the space agency said in a statement from its Ames Research Center in California’s Silicon Valley.
“The snake will provide us with flexibility and robustness in space,” said Gary Haith, the project’s engineer. “A snakebot could navigate over rough, steep terrain where a wheeled robotic rover would likely get stuck or topple.”
