Tom Bosley, who played Mr. Howard Cunningham on the series Happy Days, died of a staph infection on Tuesday at his home in Palm Springs, California. He was 83.
He is survived by his second wife, the former Patricia Carr, and daughter, Amy, People magazine reported.
The family sitcom Happy Days was set in the 1950s but ran from 1974–1984. It starred Ron Howard as the son of Bosley's patriarch character as well as Henry Winkler, who played Arthur "The Fonz" Fonzarelli.
"Tom was great," Winkler said in a statement, adding that he had spoken to Bosley lately and that he had sounded "strong".
"He was great to work with, great to play charades with," Winkler said. "He was part of the Happy Days baseball team that travelled - so great to travel with. Just a wonderful, wonderful gentlemen.. Talented, a great family man. This was a shock."
