Tornado Touches Down In Lawrence, Kan.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Tornadoes dropped from the skies over Kansas and Missouri Thursday evening for the second time in a week.

The National Weather Service estimated that at least seven tornadoes touched down in Kansas alone.

Some of the worst damage occurred in the bedroom community of Lawrence, Kan., which is about 40 miles west of Kansas City. A twister touched down about 7:37 p.m., damaging several homes, duplexes and apartment buildings.

NewsChopper 9 captured video of the tornado making its violent way through homes and apartments near Clinton Parkway and Wakarusa. Power lines could also be seen sparking as the twister sliced through a neighborhood.

Ambulances were at the scene of where the tornado appeared have sheared off the top part of an apartment complex, but no serious injuries were reported. Officials at Lawrence Memorial Hospital said a few people walked in with relatively minor injuries.

Authorities requested that sightseers stay away from the area hit by the tornado to keep from clogging roads around the damaged area.
