LIMA, Peru (CNN) -- A civilian court in Peru found an American woman guilty of collaborating with leftist rebels Wednesday but cleared her of being an active militant.
Lori Berenson, 31, was sentenced to 20 years in prison after the conviction was read Wednesday night.
After a three-month retrial, the civilian court reaffirmed a 1996 military verdict finding Berenson guilty of helping plan an attack on Peru's congress building by Peru's Tupac Amaru Revolutionary Forces. She already has served five years in prison after her earlier conviction, which was struck down last year.
