The US National Security Agency (NSA) is collecting the telephone records of tens of millions of Americans, US officials have confirmed.

The practice, first reported by the Guardian newspaper, has been used to stop a "significant" terrorist attack on the US, a senior congressman said.

On Wednesday, the newspaper published the secret order directing the Verizon company to hand over telephone data.

in my personal opinion, going through phone records is ridiculous and unnecessary. especially for terrorist information- it has to be like searching for a needle in a haystack. it's a complete breach of privacy and i'm pretty appalled- the worst part being this isn't the first time the US has done this to its citizens. :/

what are your thoughts and opinions?

I think it's invasion of privacy. Unless they have reason to think you're a terrorist then they shouldn't be listening to your calls, or anything you want to keep private.

I find this wrong imo. So basically what they are saying is everyones a terriost?

It's like the opposite of "Everyone's innocent until proven guilty"; governments are so scared of terrorists now-a-days it's just easier to monitor everyone and everything. Of course, they neglect to think about how other people feel about their privacy being violated, but then again governments don't really care about the people to begin with.

That said, it's not like you've got thirty people in the same room listening to your dirty phone conversation with the misses. :p

Lately people are getting in trouble at the airports for even looking like a terrorist with their skin color. What has society come to?

For once, this sentence comes out of my mouth: "thank god I'm on AT&T!" :U

This really is a ****ty thing to do, though. Privacy on all platforms is going bye-bye...
