I need to upgrade the video card in my girlfriends computer so she can play some games, and I was wondering if anyone could think of a good card that would go into a PCI slot, I was thinking about getting her a Voodoo 3, mostly because she doesnt want to spend much money, and It would be more then she would ever use, but at the same time I wanted to check and see if anyone had any better Ideas.
Prox, I would strongly advise against a Voodoo3 card, as they are rather out of date. If you can find a TNT2 PCI card or even a GeForce PCI card, I'd be more apt to go with that.
Speaking from experience, don't go with a V3.
I have a V3 3000 in Dana's machine, and while it's okay, she was having some video-related quirkiness. Obvious fix is to find newer drivers. Unfortunately, since 3dfx went out of business, no new "official" drivers have been released, making it quite difficult to fix driver-related problems.
If only for that reason, stay away from the Voodoo 3.
You could probably pick up a cheap ATI, or even a GF2MX card for only slightly more than what you'd pay for a TNT2, get better performance (even though it's more than she needs), and expect a longer lifeline out of the investment.
I would imagine that you could pick up something from ATI based on the Rage 128 chipset that would be good for cheap.
It'll be at least as fast as a TNT2 for games, offers better image quality, and does hardware-assist DVD decoding, should the desire to watch movies ever arise.
Do a search for "Rage 128" on Pricewatch.
Bunch of different cards should come up for under $30.
