Volkswagen will bring its oil-burning hot hatch to North America in time for 2016, official 2014 Mazda3 sedan photos leak onto the Internet and Chrysler is mulling over a pint-sized Jeep
Affectionately known in the Post Driving offices as the ‘peanut butter cup of hot hatches‘, the Volkswagen Golf GTD will find its way to North America by 2016, according to Automotive News. It will mark VeeDub’s first crack at offering a performance-oriented diesel car in North America, ringing in at about $27,000 USD, says product manager Andreas Valbuena. He also hopes it will account for about 5 to 10% of diesel Golf sales.
The report says it will bow as a 2016 model, a year after the latest Golf hits dealers early on in 2014 as a 2015 model. The GTD’s 2.0-litre diesel mill pumps out 181 horsepower and a rather impressive 280 lb-ft of torque, mated to either a manual or dual-clutch automatic transmission, both with six gears. That translates to a 0-100 km/h run of approximately seven seconds, while fuel economy is estimated – on the European cycle – at 4.2 L/100 km for the stickshift variant. Up next: A production version of the Design Vision GTI?
