Volkswagen says its May sales fell 1.7% from a year ago to 38,913 total, despite the mid-size Passat's best May ever and a strong performance from the TDI diesel version of Passat.
In fact, VW is accounting for 72% of all diesel car sales in the U.S. and 22.3% of VW sales, according to U.S. CEO Jonathan Browning.
He said car sales are being undercut by strong light truck sales -- pickups and SUVs. VW has no pickups and only two SUVs.
VW is planning to add a mid-size SUV between its small Tiguan and larger Touareg, which would give the company a strong lineup in the key part of the U.S. market. Browning noted that is coming, but wouldn't give details.
