water on mars?

Look What They Found on Mars!

This just in from Mars: There's water here. The Mars Global Surveyor, which has been orbiting the Red Planet since April 1, 1999, has radioed data to Earth suggesting there is surface water on Mars. This is a tantalizing finding since it increases the possibility of finding evidence of life, experts say. NASA hasn't officially confirmed the report, but two sources who spoke on the condition of anonymity said the Global Surveyor has detected evidence "of the effects of surface water." More details will be released next week in the journal Science. The findings are tentative and must be confirmed by other studies. One of NASA's major efforts has been searching for water on Mars and any primitive life that might exist, such as microbes. Liquid water also means that Mars could possibly be colonized one day. Water has other benefits, too. It can be chemically processed into hydrogen and oxygen, which is rocket fuel, and the oxygen could be used to supply breathing gas. Don't buy your ticket to Mars just yet. Experts said it is likely that the Red Planet is now unable to sustain surface water because of its thin atmosphere. In such conditions, liquid water would quickly sublimate into the atmosphere and out into space.
