Why do cats sleep so much?

Cats sleep an average of fifteen hours a day, and some can sleep up to twenty hours in a twenty-four hour period. Which raises the question: Why do cats sleep so much?

I do think that cats sleeping for long during the day is because of their nature, and that is why they are vibrant at night. That is how my cat behaves most of the time.
