Why high gas prices are a good thing

This is all straight out of Al Gore's book (yes, I read Al Gore's book. For fun.

) But if you noticed, all of that was abandoned during the campaign season with decries against the evil high gas prices. I find humor in such things.

Well, I DO have a problem with the fact that in the midst of all this, oil companies are posting their highest profits ever...it's not like they're just passing costs along to their customers. And at least from what I heard of Gore talking about gas prices during the campaign, this was his complaint.

I do think we're far too heavily reliant on fossil fuels, and instead of trying to ease that by building more fuel efficient vehicles or exploring alternative fuels, we all drive around in these mammoth SUV's that get about 8 miles to the gallon. (We, by the way, refers to Americans as a whole...I certainly don't have an SUV. My car gets 30 miles to the gallon, and I still think that isn't enough.)

If it wasnt for these vehicals then the demand for gas wouldnt be nearly as high, which means that the price would be much lower. I honestly hate the surbaban assult vehical with a passion. It seems that everytime I see one it is some 5'3" mom driving her 1 3 year old to preschool. So my question is this. Why do they need a vehical which seats 9.

May all these SUV's dissapear off the face of the earth.

I have to agree that SUV's are evil. I can understand the smaller ones like the Grand Vitara or Sportage, but the big ones just guzzle way too much gas. This is why I like a car that gets between 35 and 40 miles/gallon on the highway and near 30 in town. Still...more efficiency would be better, I think.

The Honda Insight is available now at a dealer. It's the only gas/electric hybrid that I know of that's "readily" availble.
Supposedly, other manufacturer's have similar models, but they're not available yet to Joe Consumer.

There's also the Toyota Prius, which is a little bigger than the Honda Insight...it's about the size of the Toyota Echo. It doesn't get QUITE as good mileage as the Insight, but almost, and it actually gets better mileage for city driving than it does for highway driving.

The Dodge Dakota 2002 is also supposed to be a hybrid.
