I'm currently using Icon Packager and WindowBlinds to modify the look and functionality of Windows.
I'm also thinking about using NEXTstep from WinStep to modify the Start Menu.

Anyone used NEXTStep yet?

How about Hover Desk? It looks like it has great possibilities, but is currently in beta.

Try Winboost 2001 Gold Edition - download here: link removed, warez links not allowed

Enjoy! Though honestly...Windows is a pane in the glass!

Ah, thanks for the link, my demo of winboost timed out and I thought I was going to have to live with my start menu saying 'hax0r' forever.

And I happen to like windows, but that's a debate I don't want to get into.

I've heard Windows Mods mentioned, but I just use what is provided by Microsucks. Do any of these mods enhance performance or reduce resource consumption? Those two things interest me, really. Any good places to do a little reading up on the subject?

No, we'll not debate the fact that friends do not let friends use Windows. Not yet

@ JHowse for the apltly named Microsuck! Yes, the mods are said to enhance performance, but...(I can't tell a lie--not even when I hear one) I have not found this to be so. It's a nice toy though

HmmH..I suppose we have to accept Microsuck's (love it!) little lies..I mean..If all mankind were suddenly to practice honesty, many thousands of people would be sure to starve *sigh*

JH> I can't speak for WinBoost, as I've never used it, but I have to say that it looks pretty pathetic.
Going to their site to get more info on the product, they seem more intent on telling me that they have registered users all over the world than what the product actually does.
What's more, it isn't supported on the NT/2000 platform.

As for the ones I have used, Icon Packager doesn't really affect performance or resources, as it's just an icon manager.
WindowBlinds does increase functionality and productivity, but does consume resources. I haven't noticed a performance hit while using it, but I know it's using CPU time to redraw window skins.

NEXTstep does seem to increase functionality and productivity a lot, since it puts everything right in front of you.
HoverDesk is a complete desktop replacement that looks like it has a lot of extra functionality thrown in.

If you used winboost, it isn't really 'pathetic' as you say. I don't know what the deal with their website is, but it's sort of like tweakUI only with plenty more options. It doens't modify the look of windows save for some renaming of some things you normally couldn't rename. But you can tweak hardware settings and most things that would require registry hacking. Only safe because of the UI

If it doesn't change the UI, then it really isn't a mod, is it?
That's like saying that TweakUI is a mod, when it's really just a graphical interface to make specific registry changes.

If you'll notice, I said that "I've never used it" and that it "looked pathetic" because their site is useless. If they can't even design a decent website to explain their product, what am I supposed to think of how well they can design an actual product?!?

This is true, DD, but the vast majority of companies unfortunately do not think this way. Even with all the Internet hype, at most places the company/product website is WAY at the bottom of the totem pole. There are notable exceptions of course but there are still way too many people in senior positions at companies that don't understand the importance of a good website.

So, then why is it being touted in this thread?!?
