For my 1000th post I figured why not discuss 1000 Island dressing.

Wow what a cool dressing; it's one of my favorites. However I've heard it made in so many different ways. Some with bacon, eggs, ketchup, worchestire sauce, etc are in the mix. Some say thin, some say thick and chunky. Post your version of 1000 (Thousand) Island Dressing here to compare. Also if you know the correct story behind the name of the dressing post what you've heard too. I've heard it was on a boat and the chef was out of a dressing so he made one up with ingredients on hand. The patron loved the dressing and named it for the area they were in (Thousand Islands). However some friends say that's not the true story so post what you know here if you heard different.

Here's some recipes I picked up long time ago somewhere (can't remember):

1----------------------------------------
Low-Fat Thousand Island Dressing

1 cup fat free mayonnaise
2 Tablespoons chili sauce
1 hard boiled egg
1 teaspoon dill pickle relish
1/4 cup lite evaporated milk
2 Tablespoons diced celery
2 Tablespoons diced green pepper
2 Tablespoons diced green onion
1 teaspoon sweet pickle relish

Place all ingredients in blender. Mix on high for 2 minutes. Store in air tight
container in refrigerator for up to 2 weeks. Serve over salad or fresh
vegetables. Makes 1 cup.

2-----------------------------------------
Ingredients
1 cup thick fresh cream
1 onion finely chopped
1 capsicum finely chopped
1 tiny sprig spring onion finely chopped
2 tbsp. salad or refined oil
2 tsp. lemon juice
2 tsp. mustard powder
2 tsp. sugar ground
8-10 olives finely chopped (optional)
2 tsbp. tomato sauce
2 tsp. green chilli sauce
salt to taste
pepper to taste

Method

Mix the salt, pepper, lemon juice, sauces, mustard, sugar, oil and mix well till light.
Add onions, capsicum, spring onion, olives and mix again.
Chill well (1-2 hours) before serving.
Pour over chilled salad just before serving.
Serve at table for extra helping as per taste.
Making time: 20 minutes
Makes: 2 cups

Note: If the cream feels too thick add some milk and beat till smooth before proceeding.

Variation: You may try a mixture of tied curd and milk, 1:1 proportion, beaten till smooth. Proceed.

3--------------------------------------------

Yield: 6 servings

1 c Mayonnaise
2 Hard boiled eggs
1 Onion (small)
Dash Tabasco sauce
1 c Chili sauce
1 Medium dill pickle
Dash A-1 sauce

1. Mix all ingredients and chill.

Thousand Island dressing is a variation of Russian Dressing that was created by Sophia Lalonde of Clayton, NY. Her husband was a fishing guide in the area and one of the guests, a NYC actress named May Irwin, fell in love with it. She was one one who named it and provided the recipe to George Boldt the owner of the Waldorf Astoria hotel in NYC where it became world famous. The Herald Hotel, in Clayton, was the first place it was served to the public and today is called the Thousand Island Inn.

Cool JOURG, I knew there was another story that made more sense. However going online search you have to sift through version I heard more often than coming across yours. I take it you like 1000 Island dressing to know history of it. There's nothing like a salad and getting Th. Island on the side mmmmmmmmmmmmmmm.

Well, I really only knew the part about George Boldt and I looked the rest up. Boldt built Boldt Castle on Heart Island in the 1000 Islands for his wife, who died before it was finished. It's a big tourist attraction in the 1000 Islands. I knew that he owned the Waldorf Astoria and that's where the dressing became really famous.
