I've often wondered what the noises mean on a dial up connection...

Actually, first the protocol is negotiated and then the connection is established. There's a number of dial-up protocols, I think SLIP/PPP or something is most common (can't remember).

You have an analog carrier signal modulated by a digital signal. When it sounds like white noise, the frequency is pretty high (as with 33 kbps or 56 kbps modems).

I'm not an expert in this tho! ;)

BTW, computer programs or data recorded on audio tape do have a similar sound. ;)
