So yesterday was a record for the most energy usage in the history of Toronto... which is pretty astounding, if you think about it. Toronto is, after all, one of the largest cities in North America...so if you consider that, and consider the amount of energy that must have been consumed...it's a pretty sobering thought.

Moreover, when you consider what's actually causing this extreme heat (if you believe in global warming), you realize that our A/C use is a major contributor. One of those catch 22 type things...

This was just sort of a general thought I was having...but I guess if I had to ask a specific question it would be this - should I feel really guilty for having just bought an A/C unit for my apartment? I did manage to make it this far through the summer without one...but on very little sleep. Last night was one of the most miserable nights I've ever had, sleepwise. I plan only to use the unit in my bedroom to help me sleep, and to have it off during the day while I'm at work.

What do you folks think about A/C, and energy usage?

I don't understand the question.

What do I think of air conditioning? I think "thank god someone invented this!!!!!!"

As for energy usage, I believe in trying to be a good conservationist, although economics plays a big role as well. We keep our thermostat at home at either 73 or 74, and when we go away for more than a day, we set the thermostat to be higher while no one's home.

Well it's one of those things that humans have done and continue to do to the planet. The further we go and the higher the population gets the more damage we do. It's kind of like a highschool kegger at times.

That being said, of all of the things we could adjust to be better for the environment or even cut out all together, AC won't be one of them. :D

I kind of figured most of the responses would be in the form of - well I love A/C, but energy usage is bad. Forgive me for not really posing a well formed question.

I didn't really mean to simply ask whether or not people like air conditioning...because we all know the answer to that. It was just more what Eison touched on - should it be something we give up along the road to trying to decrease energy consumption and help the environment?

For health reasons I would actually say no. Especially not when we can think of so many other ways that energy could be saved, or less necessary things eliminated. With temps in many places staying in the 90's and even 100's during the summer days I don't think that AC is what needs to go.

Eventually we (humans) would adapt to it.

But **** that, I luv me sum a/c and I'm in support of any device that will help prevent fat people from sweating. They have a distinct and pugnant odor to them. It's like a mix of Old Spice and Stetson. Ewwww.

I suppose...but consider people who live in much hotter climates and don't have anything in the way of A/C...they seem to get along.

Screw them, I am more in favor of devices that keep ME from sweating. :D

True, we could adapt backwards as SGT said, but again think of all the other was that we waste energy and pollute as a society. My thought is there is still plenty of other things that can and should go first before my precious AC.

Alright...down with cars it is!

I think Without AC I would be a mean, pissy person.
Take away my arms, but leave my A.C. Alone

Hold on one minute, I have a very important use for my arms :shifty:

as an update - finally got the thing installed...I'm not going to lie, it's heaven...haha. Of course it makes the rest of my apartment and outside feel like an oven...but at least I'll sleep well in my ice cool room! :D
