Alcohol in the clubhouse

ESPN just keeps mentioning it. So I was wondering how common it was for teams to have alcohol in the clubhouse. They also mentioned whiskey in Boston. So is this a common thing or no?


I could see Tim Lincecum taking some shots before the game. I don't mean before a start though.
 
Obviously it was a problem for the Red Sox last year. The new manager Bobby Valentine announced a couple of days ago that it will be banned for their clubhouse this year. I'm not sure how prevalent it is for other teams.
 
In the sense of professionalism, they really need to put a stop to that. I know it's a sport. But it's something they get paid for. Which makes it a business. And last I remember, "drinking on the job" was never a good thing.
 
I don't see why the players need to be in the clubhouse at all. This was like the day after Beckett threw 9 innings so there is 0 chance of playing. I get that you don't want some drunk slob in the clubhouse when the team is trying to play, but I don't think they should be there at all if they have no chance of playing.

Why not let them sit in their street clothes up in the VIP boxes and enjoy the game with a few drinks? They still need to be responsible and not get sloppy in case their is a meeting or something after the game but otherwise they didn't do anything to affect their ability to play.
 
It really shouldn't have been in there in the first place. Baseball is a job and it's these guys jobs to carry themselves in a professional manner and not be intoxicated at work. It's shameful to the organization and the fans who pay money to see these guys play.
 
I honestly don't care. If you can perform while drinking then do it. Most can't. Miguel Cabrera can! Though, if it becomes this big of a deal then it should be banned.

This.

I mean after all it is the clubhouse.

But as it is evident, players have trouble controlling themselves =.=
 
Yeah, I really don't care whether they do or not.

I can understand why the managers would want to, but it makes no difference to me. If I were a player though and my salary depended on it, I probably wouldn't drink.
 
I think more than whether or not it actually impacted their play was the impact on their relationships with others on the team. I'm a huge Red Sox fan and it was clear that down the stretch they didn't trust each other or have the same sense of camaraderie that they should have. It's disrespectful to your teammates who do have to show up to play every day and to the game of baseball to be drinking during a game. Is it really that hard to wait until after it's over?
 
I'm not sure of any other job where you get to drink beer so I don't see why baseball should be any different. The problem is lots of pro athletes feel entitled.
 
if I'm incharge of the yankees i would only ban alcohol before a game but may have it when they win.

but i would also fill the visitors clubhouse full of beer for free as a courtious gift for our visitors so they can drink before, inbetween and after a game

Nice gamesmanship, you could also mess with their thermostat too. I know the Colts used to use artificial crowd noise.

Is that the Boston excuse this season? There is always something; how about this..the Red Sox couldn't pull it together and choked? No trust issues or romantic comedy plot; they just blew it.
 
I could see if they offered alcohol after games but not avaliable at all times. The last thing I would want is what happened in Boston. I wouldn't want pitchers drinking during games when they aren't pitching. So I'm happy Valentine banned it in Boston.

I don't think it's an excuse, I'm a sox fan and they choked. They were out of shape, Beckett was fat. Lester looked like he was going to drop dead on the mound, his face was apple red. They clubhouse was divided. You had the beer drinking pitching crew who basically didn't even talk to the position players. Those aren't excuses just facts, the Red Sox absolutely choked.
 
It's a long season. I'm not even sure if I would drink during the season. Dan Uggla once told me they go out quiet a bit after games, not if their in first place in august though, because as a baseball player, you would go crazy if you didn't let off a little steam. Says it's very stressful.

I don't see anything wrong with a starter with an off day drinking a few. But your everyday shortstop, that's a no no.
 
I don't see why its needed in the clubhouse (and 20 MLB teams agree with me since they don't allow it).

These are athletes and alcohol certainly does no good for you athletically, physically, etc.

Drink on your own time.
 
I honestly think alcohol should not be allowed in the clubhouse. I mean these guys get paid millions of dollars to do their job and beer shouldn't get in the way of that. If they want a drink they can find a bar after the game. No teams should be allowed alcohol because they shouldn't even take the chance of something bad happening.
