"New York: Astronomers are planning a massive 250-foot telescope that will search for extraterrestrial life by detecting the heat that alien civilisations may produce.

The proposed instrument called Colossus would measure 77 metres which is more than double the aperture of any telescope yet constructed. It is expected to cost USD 1 billion.

The telescope would be sensitive enough to spot cities or other signs of aliens for planets as far as 60 to 70 light-years from Earth, astronomers said.

More here.

Woot.
How excited are you for these news? :P

Awwww yeah. As a huge astronomy enthusiast this makes me veryyyyy excited. Do you think they'd tell us if they found anything?

That civilizations MAY produce. For all we know, aliens may not be like us, they may not need or create heat. This is something I think people overlook when talking about aliens. They assume they're carbon-based, like us.

That was my first thought too.
It sounds like a good idea and all, but I really doubt that if we were to find aliens, they would be producing heat. That's why they're aliens after all! Because they won't be anything like us. But then, who knows?
