Are zoos good?

I don't see why they would be bad.
They are used to remind humans about wildlife and exotic animals. Specially kids, who tend to be fascinated by animals since little, are taught to learn about them this way - and a zoo is simply amazing to their eyes. Personally, when I was little, I knew everything about animals - their names, their species, what they ate, their habitat... So I loved going to the zoo!
Of course, zoos are good when they meet the requirements - wild animals requires space, excellent maintenance (vaccins, food, etc), so it's basially a huge responsability + investment.

With the current world's situation, expansions of territories and whatnot, I guess animals are running out of places to live, which is sadly, unavoidable? Zoos keep us in contact with the amazing species on earth while safeguarding them, providing them their own spaces and making sure the offspring is healthy.

Neither really. But if I had to pick, then I say good.
However, I enjoy going to the zoo and being able to see animals I wouldn't normally see in real life. When I was a kid, and even now, I was only interested in learning about 'exotic animals' and whatnot because I was better at learning about things when I got close enough to look for myself at something. Even if I wasn't able to touch it, so long as I was close enough to touch it, then it was okay. But that was just me. Plus I just liked seeing the animals too, because it was cool.

Anyway, so long as the animals have plenty of room, they're being fed/taken care of, and their environments are being kept fairly clean then I don't have a problem with the zoo.

The only time I'd really consider a zoo bad is if the environments were poor, the animals were unhealthy, they are not being fed properly, etc. But that doesn't mean all zoos are bad, it's matter of the individual zoos.

I would gravitate more towards being bad. No matter what you say, the animals held within those cages and pens are wild animals. They aren't domesticated, and they haven't been bred to roll over or offer their paws on command. At some point, they have been removed from their natural environment by hunters. If we do that to another human being, it is a crime. My main issue with zoos however, is that while they do teach things about these creatures, they do not teach a true respect for them. They're caged beasts and they're used as a means to earn money, no matter how noble a cause you may wish to argue, a zoo's primary purpose is to generate income. This is done by trotting killer beasts around while onlookers throw money at the handlers.

Even those who are born in captivity are born with a broken spirit. They are cared for from infancy to senility, and they want for nothing. Their food is delivered pre-prepared, their confines are cleaned out by their self-professed owners. Their wild spirit is crushed into dust under the boot of human greed.

I can think of no worse a hell.

Animals live longer in captivity and they're kept from going extinct often.

I'd say good. I really love going to zoos and I'd really love to go to Edinburgh Zoo to see the pandas x3

Oh you! :B

I like a lot of you guys' opinions.
If I had to pick between them being good or bad, I would also have to say they're bad. While, they do keep animals alive and well... If the species can no longer survive in their natural conditions, who are we to take them from their natural habitat and put them in cages? f a species is being hunted and they are going extinct, then we should place bans on hunting them, or being in the area where they are. It kind of messes up the food chain when you take animals out of their habitat and try to keep them in balance like that.

If Sea World and Zoos have anything in common then I am definitely against zoos (I see a lot of stats and news that shows Sea World to be really bad for the animals) but I don't think zoos are as bad. That's just guessing though, I haven't really looked into zoos before. From what I've heard, they normally treat the animals really well and give them lots of space, unlike Sea World. But in the EU we have many many better laws and regulations for animals than the US anyway.

Although I'm an animal lover, I do think they're good. They can help animals avoid complete extinction and a lot of zoos are more like rehabilitation centres to save baby animals from dying and most are released into the wild when they can survive on their own. I think without zoos, many species would have completely died out by now. They also teach us more about the animals we share this earth with and we're more knowledgeable about their capabilities if ever we came into contact with one in the wild, which inevitably could save people's lives.
