Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire did good for its opening. But there are people that still think the books and the movie are pieces of crap. And those are the people who see the movies and buy the books the most out of every person in the world. I'm a die hard Potter fan and so are a couple of my friends and I think as a people we need to put these hypocrites to rest if you know what I mean. :violent5: Does anybody else know or seen any people who put down or frown down upon these great piece of art & literature?

You see, there's a difference between worshiping a well-written work of literary art, and then, such as my sister, who is the begginings of a Harry Potter Cult. I'm a massive fan of the books. The movies killed parts of my soul with every viewing of them.

i must admit i have not really seen any of the harry potter movies all the way through (just because i havent had the chance to) or read any of the books
however i do know people when they first movie came out that were totally freaking out one chruch had a book and movie burning because the books and movies promte young kids to dabble with witchcraft. they said the book has real spells and the movies would help the children learn to say them correctly. when i asked if any of the people if they had read the book or seen the movie they said no. i asked where they got their information on the whole witchcraft and spells thing and they told me some flyer they got from some major Christian guy (sorry i didnt think that info was very important at the time so i dont remember his name)
the way i see it if you dont like it dont read or watch but if someone wants to it is their choice.

Hehe sounds like what they said about Dungeons and Dragons. I knew one mother who told me its Satan's book. It should never be allowed in her house ever again.

I haven't seen all the movies (only saw the first two) and haven't read any of the books. I enjoyed the movies and the concept so far.

There will always people criticizing it. There is no away around it. Also people will compare it with other literature/movies that are similiar. For example Star Wars fans and Star Trek fans always compared the films and stories with each other.

Ok, before I say this, let me be crystal clear : I have read every Harry Potter book, and I have liked them all. I have seen all the movies, and I have like them all. I think Ms Rowling is a wonderful author, and I think the millions of children she has encouraged to read is magnificent!

I have heard three major criticisms:

1) Harry breaks rules all the time, and could be seen as a negative influence on children, encouraging them to follow rules only when they deem fit.

I certainly can see how people can say this, but I just don't agree that it has influence on children that proponents of this criticism profess. I think this is a valid criticism, I just don't agree with it.

2) Harry Potter uses magic and spells, which are the work of the devil. Again, I can see how people can say this, but again, I just don't agree. I think that very religious people are entitled to their beliefs, and I respect them, I just don't share them on this particular issue.

3) The Harry Potter series does not deserve the recognition it has gotten: Ms Rowling is a poster girl for liberals, and that is why the liberal establishment got behind her and made her books what they are.

This I somewhat agree with. As a fan of the Harry Potter Series, I can say with earnest: I LOVE THE SERIES! I just can not help but think that the amount of publicity the first book received made it the success that it was. For example, I think the Lord of the Rings is a masterpiece, and is "better written" then the Potter series, and until the success of the movies, it never really received the credit it was due. The same can be said about the Narnia books. I certainly do not hold this against Ms Rowling, and it certainly does not effect my opinion of the books. I just think she wrote the books, and the press grabbed them and ran with them.

Not sure about your Lord of the Rings comment not receiving its credit when it was due. Lord of the Rings or at least the Hobbit was read in school. I originally read all 4 books for my English class - Junior High School. (Public School). Also read the Hobbit again in High School (Catholic School).

Its been a best seller, huge following of the Lord of the Rings. By 1984 - 8 million copies of each book was sold. Who knows how many copies have been sold by now? 1 animated film and 2 short animated cartoons were made on his stories prior the Peter Jackson box office hit.

Without a doubt the older generations would know the Lord of the Rings. Yes the younger generation may not know of this story but that is okay. The story is pretty dark and not really suitable for younger children.

The books is always constantly reprinted and in the market. Not many modern day authors can say that. Even Ian Fleming infamous James Bond novels or Anne Rice complete collection of books are not always re-printed constantly (annually). Some books are taken off the market for periods of time even when the author is famous. Constant marketable of the books is rare for most authors. Only a few like Stephen King, Tom Clancy, JRR Tolkien, etc have apparent constant market for their older books and complete collection of novels. Others would be lucky to be like L Ron Hubbard books are periodically put back in the market place.

Raises hand.

I dont hate them movies. I just did not think they were all that good. There are alot of things I would rather spend my time watching. As for the books they have never sparked any intrest for me and I am a die hard fantasy fan. The whole wizards and witches thing just does not do it for me. As for the movies I found the plots to be far to predictable. There just isnt enough depth, its like they just throw fantasy cliches at you for 2 1/2 hours and expect you to think its new and exiting. The special effects where top notch but like I said in another post, I could have watched the movie with all the dialog muted and been just as entertained.

Im still holding up hope for Narnia. I liked that universe SO much more.

All in all it just does not pull me in. I feal no connection to the charcaters at all and I could really care less what will happen next. I am told the books are better but like I said, not my cup O tea.

To be honest I've learnt not to care if people critise it, as long as I like it and some people have the same view, than I want her to carry on with the books, and for the films to be made.

Everyone has different opinions so of course some aren't going to like it

I think she has done a marvelous job. I am sure she doesn't care what the nay sayers are complaining about; she has made her mark and is no longer in dire straits.

I think the Harry Potter books and movies are absolutely magical! I loved every single one of them! In my mind, any author who can make as many children pick up a book and read and be ENTHUSIASTIC about it as J.K. Rowlings has, has earned my praise. Every time one of these "Christian" conservative bigots come out with a new witch hunt, my stomach turns. The Potter series has done nothing but to exercise young, bored imaginations and expand their creativity. Bravo, Harry Potter et al!!!!!

Harry Potter Haters tend to belong to the Triple A: Angry, Argumentative Atheists.

They lack a sense of wonder. They lack an awful lot, come to think of it. ;)

I disagree here. To date I have not heard of any atheist oppostition to the Harry Potter series. The main opposition to that series (that I have seen) comes from Christians, as the book advocates "witchcraft." Not all Christians, of course, just the over-zealous. Personally I have read the entire series thus far and enjoyed it thoroughly, as have my family members, all of whom are atheist. Also, you needn't believe in a religion to have a sense of wonder.

"I maintain there is much more wonder in science than in pseudoscience. And in addition, to whatever measure this term has any meaning, science has the additional virtue, and it is not an inconsiderable one, of being true." - Carl Sagan

Harry Potter is a work of Christian literature, disguised as a children's story. I've got a link if I can dig it up.

Harry may break rules, but leaders need to be, well, leaders, and not followers. They need maybe not recklessness, but the ability to take action and not talk a problem to death. Followers like Neville may even behave in a heroic fashion within their own limitations, but they're not heroes. Harry is.

OK, I found the link:

Whatever sort of liturature it is, there are way better things out there to read. I have no issue with kids reading it. Its a great kids book, but seriously ADULTS there is SOOOOOOO much more you could be reading. Im halfway through "The Decent" Its awsome, anyone who is afraid of demons and crampt places should definatly read it, you wont sleep for weeks.

My problem with adults reading Harry Potter is that the make it out to be more than a childrens book, and go on about deeper meaning and literary motifs and whatnot...but really the books are JUST CHILDREN'S BOOKS. I read them, but I don't make it out for more than what it is, I've just always enjoyed children's books.

I have the Harry Potter PS1 game. It is rather fun but I can't seem to get to far in the levels. That sucks as I am getting tired of seeing the same thing all the time. Guess I will have to rent the three year old across the hall to reach another level for me. It seems like they have the knack for conquering video games! LOL
