I would say that it is an investment, just most likely not a good one.

Just tell your husband that for every pair of basketball shoes he buys you get to spend the same amount of money on something that you want

I tihnk its pretty hard to predict what will become collectible and what will rocket in value, collect what you enjoy.

If he plans on selling the rare shows at a later dates, it's an investment. If you know he's never gonna part with them, it's a hobby. Sneakerheads don't usually sell their shoes. If they do, it's usually to get more shoes.
