Formerly known as Star Fox Armada, Star Fox 2, care of Namco in conjunction with Nintendo, comes to GameCube sometime this year as a 3D action-shooter. Nintendo gave a little showing of the game’s multiplayer mode and we walked away rather satisfied.

Star Fox 2 grants players the abilities to take control of their favorite classic Star Fox characters, such as Fox McCloud (obviously) and Slippy and pit them against each other in a head-to-head deathmatch in adequately sized 3D battle environments. We say adequately sized because the battle arenas aren’t the largest you’ll find in the genre, but they also aren’t small in comparison. They fit snuggly right in the middle.

Aside from handheld combat, you can also take control of various vehicles scattered across the levels, each complete with their own set of artillery, speed and handling mechanics. There are also extra goodies that are part of the environment itself, such as rail cars that you can hop in to try to make a quick getaway or use to your advantage to mow through the opposition.

There’s a fairly substantial amount of balance between vehicular combat and on-ground traditional styled warfare. Even though you’d assume that the person with the tank has the bigger advantage (or even piloting the Arwing), SF2 manages to balance things out, as there are plenty of on-ground defenses, from places to prtect yourself to rail guns placed in proper attack locations. This adds a bit more depth to the multiplayer when compared to games such as Halo, where the person in the tank is almost always going to win no matter what.

Graphically, the game doesn’t hold up to its GameCube predecessor. A much more simple approach was taken this time around, as character detail and environments aren’t as radiant as before, but are smooth and nice enough to make for a seemingly fast paced game without lag. Could the game’s visuals get better? Yes, they can, but as they are they aren’t ugly, just need improvement.

Unfortunately, the game thus far doesn’t hold its own against other games in the genre. It’s not going to blow you away as you’d hoped, but it still makes for a good multiplayer game. Battling it out with your favorite Star Fox characters is also a big plus that many will enjoy.

sucks that it is only a single player - o well

typo... doh :) u can't have a multiplayer game for only 1 player ;)

SO the game is totally multyplayer, no single player story or anything
