does anybody have this service and like it? any problems? i was thinking of getting digital cable which is only around $10 more per month than i'm paying now, but then i happened to walk into the directv display at blockbuster yesterday and now i'm a bit confused. it seems that for around $45/mo. you get a billion channels w/dtv, but there's got to be a catch somewhere ...

I've had directTV for about 6 six years and I like it a lot.

Reasons to get it:

-Cheaper or comparable price
-You own everything, so if you discontinue the service and join later, it's only one phone call to get you back up in under 5 minutes.
-Clear digital signal, and the ability to run an s-video cable or composite cable to your TV/VCR instead of coax.
-Same channels as "digital cable" plus a lot of bonuses.
-Ability to choose packages (HBO/Cinemax, Showtime/TMC, Stars)

Downsides:

-If you have heavy rain (like really heavy) you may loose a signal.
-You have to buy all the basic channels before you can get premium ones. It used to be on a different lineup where you could just buy HBO or something, but it's changed.

I did change to local cable to get a discount on my cable net connection, but I ended up paying $10 more a month for half/quarter the channels.

Hope that helps your decision. FYI, I pay $30/month for basic which has channels like comedy/MTV/MTV2/MUCHmusic(they actually play music, how novel)/the discovery channels/TechTV/and some other stuff I never watch but may interest you.

Oh yeah, it's like $15/month in addition to the $30 for each package (HBO&Cinemax or Showtime&TMC or Starz)

okay, i've been investigating this further: you must pay an additional $5.99/mo. just to receive your local channel lineup and $4.99/mo. for a second tv to get the same stuff on it as the main tv.

for what i want though, it'll still only end up running me about $60-$70/mo. i'm paying $40 now for crappy cable and that doesn't even include one hbo channel

radio shack is running a good deal now. after the rebate, the installation is free, so i may go w/them.

the only other question i had was about service in the future. what if the equipment breaks? w/cable, they don't charge for service calls or to replace equipment, but i'm not sure about satellite tv. would you happen to know anything about that?

Unless you've heavily into additional sports programming, be sure to cover your bases and fully explore all plans that Dish Network has to offer.

I highly recommend them, as both Lysi and I have first hand experience with them.

I'm not sure about repair costs and the like, but I haven't have one problem in the six years I've had it. Luck of the draw I guess.
