OK, as many of you know we rescued a rottiweiler December 2010 that was abused by his owner.

We have had several attempts of him trying to bite people. Well, Friday was his third attempt. My husbands boss came by the house to pick some stuff up and he was petting Cooper and he bite him. His hair was raised and he was foaming at the mouth.

We were hoping this would stop as we love him very much and try to work with him, but I am afraid as he gets bigger and bigger he is going to do more damage. And I worry we will not be able to control him.

I know there are ALOT of dog lovers here and I was just wanting some advice or ideas.

My son and I do not want to give up on him, but my husband, he seriously worried that someone will sue us if he gets out and bites someone or God forbid someone comes into the yard (like the metro readers).

HELP!!!!! :surrender:
 
We really can not afford that right now. I have been looking online for ideas and I have been trying them but I guess they are not working......
 
I may be unpopular in my opinion... Put the dog down. The liability and the guilt are too great to leave to chance.

Full disclosure... I witnessed a brutal attack at a birthday party. The girl lost a good portion of the flesh and muscle in her arm.
 
It breaks my heart, my sister has Cooper's bother and I just can't think of putting him down. I was thinking of talking to the breeder and seeing what she says.

All I know is if I ever come face to face to the man that hurt my dog, it would not be good!!! :surrender:
 
He really scared me that day at your house. I think you have to go with your gut before someone really gets hurt.

When my DD was only 4 she was attacked by a shelter dog that we had just adopted a few wks. earlier...they said he was friendly but she was just petting him one day and he just turned on her and bit her in the mouth...I can only wonder what happened to him...he was a stray but acted as if he had been in a home before since he would jump up on the couches and beds like he owned the place...the minute he attacked my DD, he went back to the shelter and i think they HAD to put him down...she had 20 some stitches in her mouth and you can still see faint scars to this day. Thankfully we now have a pooch that she just loves and she falls all over this dog and puts her face in this dogs face and our dog now just loves her and licks her in the face...so happy ending. But some dogs just can't be helped.

How scary! I am sorry that happened to your DD. It is so weird cause Cooper doesn't bother any of the kids that come in and out of the house. Just MEN. I am not saying he NEVER will, but for some reason it has always been men. I tried to take him to get groomed once and it was a guy. Cooper was not having it, I got a call 5 minutes later to come back and get him. He had chewed through the muzzle.
We are talking about a 120lb rott. His father is 188 pounds.
 
No wonder Tom wants to get rid of him! Lol

But seriously, he tried to nip at me and I'm not a man. Thank god there was a fence between us! I just think if you are having these thoughts and you don't do anything about it and god forbid he does bite someone I don't think you wil be able to forgive yourself.
 
I am so so sorry for you - it's heartbreaking because you know it's not the dog's fault.....I agree with others though, he might not be able to be helped before he hurts someone. I also would like a minute alone with the person who did this to that poor animal.

Yeah, he has never done that to any other women or child. I think maybe cause it was dark. IDK!!! Tom's boss was on the other side of the fence too, Thank God!

I think I am going to contact the breeder and see what she says.

Secretly swap dogs with your sister and let her deal with it and have to make the decission. :giggles:

I fostered Gadget's brother for a while. I was wrestling with him the same way I would with Gadget and I ended up with my head in his mouth. I was lucky as he let go fairly quickly, but he had punctured the top of my head. I was devastated as I knew if I told the shelter that he would be put down, but I also knew if I didn't say anything and something happened then I'd never be able to forgive myself.

In this case they were able to adopt him out to a couple that were aware of his nature and they had to sign that he would be well supervised and never allowed to wrestle.

There was another case at the shelter where for some reason one of the dogs (medium sized), when out on a walk, decided to attack another dog unprovoked. The volunteer walking him tried to break up the fight and ended up with a moderately injured arm. It was heartbreaking for this seemingly good dog to be put down, but no-one knew what had triggered the attack and they couldn't risk it happening again.

If you are asking here you are already worried. Follow your conscience, not your heart.
 
How exactly was he abused? I feel bad for you and the doggie:( Are there any dog trainers in your area...maybe they could have some ideas dealing with an abused dog. Good luck:)
 
I love my dog very much and went through a similar situation with a husky we rescued but its not a difficult decision when you need to choose the safety of a person over an animal.
 
Alicia I know how hard it is to live with a "problem child". Can you try to get an assessment from a trainer? They'll sometimes do the initial session for free and can offer some good advice.

Maybe contact your local shelter to get the name of a trainer they recommend.

We had a dog like that once...it is so stressful to live fearing your dog will hurt or kill someone. Ours started out like yours...friendly towards us & seemingly everyone. As he got older (he was about a year old when we got him & around 3 when we put him down, so he wasn't an "old" dog) he started disliking men, then women, then children. He would lunge at people, we had to keep him crated when people were over. That was fine for the most part, but we have a cottage & would have friends go with us, so it was harder to control him in a different setting with other people.

I tried a muzzle for awhile. It finally got to the point where he could only be around our immediate family without me or DH having to literally keep him on a short leash right at our sides. Our house was a revolving door with neighborhood kids in & out all day. It was so stressful worrying I'd run to the store & one of the kids would want to pet our dog.

Finally we got a new puppy & DH stupidly put both dogs out in the dog run while he took a work call. When he went back outside a few minutes later, our dog had practically ripped the new puppy's face off. He required over 30 stitches on his face, which was about the size of a softball. That was it. Thankfully he did it to another dog & not someone's kid. I knew he was dangerous & I should have had him put down way before I did, but it took seeing what he did to a little puppy to convince me because I "felt bad."

It's a horrible decision to have to make, but if he hurts one of your kids or someone else, you'll feel a lot worse. :huggy:

ETA- when he was gone, it felt like a huge weight had been lifted from our shoulders. We didn't even realize how stressful he made our lives.
