hey.i m about to buy a dsl router and switch for my 3 computers and soon to be dsl. there are 4port dsl routers and 1port dsl routers. Would there be any advantage to getting the 1port and then a 5 port switch? also, there seems to be a lot of network adapters with about a $5 differnce of same brand. they all look same to me. whats the difference? and is there a certain brand of router, switch or adapter i should get? thanx. for info

No, there really isn't any disadvantage to getting the router with a 1-port integrated switch and adding your own 5-port. Possibly, the extra equipment might be looked at as a disadvantage because it takes up space and adds an extra factor into the troubleshooting process if you should ever have any problems.
Functionally, there's no difference. You just hook the 5-port switch to the uplink port on the router.

As for NICs, there's really not much of a difference between a $10 Linksys and a $40 3Com if you're using Windows, except for possible support and some compatibility issues. I never have gotten my Linksys cards to work with any version of Linux, but the 3Com worked immediately with no additional configuration. Both work with no issues in Windows.
