DVD: A Guide to Home Theaters

Dan, you're basically right about Bose. My brother swears by them as he has a pair of 201's. The problem with those speakers is that they really max out the bass around 60 Hz, but not much else. At least, that's what an audiophile told me. If I had to comment on his speakers, I'd say they have a ton of bass around the 60 Hz range, they provide ok low to mid, and a teansy bit of high. The super lows are not even present, and the range is kind of crappy.

I'm with Dan. Don't buy Bose.

My speaker setup is like this:
Front: Infinity bookshelves
Center: Sony center channel
Rear: Sony satellites
Subwoofer: Velodyne VA-8100X

For the room that it's in, this setup is perfect. Not a terribly large room, but this setup is enough to overpower it if I crank it.
Aside from the power, it sounds incredibly. Mellow tones come through perfectly. Only way it could possibly sound better is in a room with better acoustics, but I don't own the place, so beggars can't be choosers.

Sorry, kinda lost track of this thread. DD and JH pretty much covered my reasons for staying away from Bose though. Personally, I went with a Boston Acoustics system (needed tiny satellites), that IMHO sounded better (more crisp / clear) than equivalent Polk Audio and Infinity satellites.

But like DD said about Infinity, Boston Acoustics doesn't really fit into the audiophile category either. For people who are a more serious about high-quality speakers I'd recommend Mirage , B&W , and Bang & Olufsen [zoopy: I believe these are the ones you were referring to].

I have to agree with the Bose name adding more cost than is necessary. Although I do like the Bose 901's that a friend of mine used to have.

I find it interesting to hear what others have.

My System currently includes:

Front: Mordaunt-Short towers
Center: PSB center channel
Rear: Polk bookshelves
Sub: Parasound (passive)

Receiver: Denon pro-logic (hopefully I will upgrade soon)
Integrated Amp: 1968 Kenwood that I use to power the sub
DVD: Toshiba (it was fairly inexpensive, but does the job)
TV: 27" Sony WEGA flat tube

DD> I use the component cables and I think they are the way to go. I only used s-video for a short period of time, but they are definitely an improvement.

For someone looking for a decent subwoofer that's not too pricey, I have to mention mine. While it cost more (roughly $450) than any other component in my system except the 27" Sony Wega, it's amazing. It has an 8" active down-throwing cone and a 10" passive forward-throwing cone. Response is excellent, and it's not too overpowering if you turn it down. However, if you really want to shake everything in the room, edge the knob a hair and turn the volume up a little. This thing really has some great bass.

I had a roommate in college who had a similar Velodyne sub. I think was 60 or 75 watts and had faux marble feet (very classy

). We lived in a townhouse that was connected to others and you could hear the bass through about 3 walls to either side of our living room.

I almost forgot got about the key ingredient to my a/v system. I have this old ocilloscope. You know, those science fiction looking boxes that have a screen which shows the waves of electronic signals. I hooked it into the headphone jack of the receiver and you get to see the sound waves of music or movie or whatever.

I built a stereo cabinet with a circle cut in the door so you can see the screen without seeinf the rest of it.

I think it's cool, but don't use it much with movies as it is a bit distracting.

That's pretty slick, JG. If you want it to be cooler, have two O-scopes running. One for the left, and one for the right.

Then you get to see the channel seperation.

Or, if your O-scope is a two input scope, you can set the x on one input to plus 5 or something and the x on the other input to minus 5 to see the channel seperation. Just some thoughts.

Also, another cool effect is to turn on the Leisajous figures (used for measuring capaciters)...based on sin and cosin...and I know I didn't spell that right. The output should have a more flowery look, I hope.

A sub should be seen, and not heard.

As for the cables, $60 is just too **** expensive. I have the S-video for now, and it's quite sufficient, so I'll be patient and wait for a bargain to fall into my lap on the component Monster Cable.
And cheap and Monster Cable can go hand-in-hand. I got this 1M S-video cable for $15, but that's because it was mis-priced.

My system composes of:
JVC S-VHS, DVD and DD-ready reciever
Technics SH-AC500D DD/DTS decoder
Front: Cerwin-Vega's E712 Floor standing speakers
Center: Advent Center Channel speaker
Rears: went cheap...used sisters speakers. KLH surround.
Sub: JBL Powered PSW-D112(friend works at BB, and told me they had open box for $160).

RCA 27" TV will be upgrading to 40-50" Toshiba HDTV soon.

I also connect a stabilizer from my DVD to my VHS by s-video for..uhmm, wipeing out those color shifts caused by macro-protection for better viewing.

Well, I heard on the radio that Tweater was having a big sale to get rid of last years models etc. So I stopped by and purchased a Denon AVR 3200 Dolby Digital Receiver. They originally went for between $999.00 and $1200.00 and I got it for $450.00. Not too bad. And now I have 5.1 channel digital. surrond sound. I'm still using my AVR 600 receiver although I'm using it just as an amp to power my passive sub.
