This was the game that finally prompted me to get a PS2, and I'm so glad I did. This game is totally worth it.

The single player is a lot of fun. You start with a tutorial on how to do the basic moves, such as playing notes and chords. After that, you learn about Star Power and the whammy bar, and finally, the advanced moves like hammer-ons and pull-offs for playing multiple notes in rapid succession.

Then, you get into career mode, where you start out playing in basements and small clubs, and move up to large clubs and arenas. You start out with a relatively short and easy playlist, and work your way up to unlock more songs with increasing difficulty. The game is very easy to start out in, and each song gets progressively harder, with each mode preparing you for the more difficult levels.

The song list is great, with some fantastic guitar-centric songs by both classic and new rock artists. It's very varied (from Queen and David Bowie to Pantera and Helmet) and all of the songs are recognizable and fun. While there are some bands that you might not have heard of, their songs are fun to play, and nice to listen to. While all of the songs are technically covers, the in-game "band" does a good enough job of recreating them that they sound enough like the real thing that you might not notice. There are a few notable omissions from the playlist (Van Halen, The Who, AC/DC), but the ones that are there are so much fun, that there could have been 100 songs, and you'd still be wanting more.

Where the game really kicks into gear is multiplayer. Instead of the typical head-to-head format, Guitar Hero throws a bit of a curveball, with a classic "guitar duel" style showdown. The two players square off on the same song, but playing complementary parts, rather than playing all of the notes simultaneously. The end result is both challenging and fun, with each player not only trying to beat the other, but both working together to make the song sound "complete".

The only downside is that, in order to really get the experience of this game, you have to buy it with the special GS controllers, which run about $40 each, and if you want to play multiplayer, you'll need a second. However, the game is so much fun that you'll want to have them, and if they come out with a sequel, the controllers will have more than paid for themselves.

If you're looking for a fun game, definitely pick this one up. It's a great game for novices, music buffs, guitar fans, and any fan of rock music in general. It's also a great game for parties or gettogether, and the SG controllers make for a cool conversation piece to introduce new people into the game.

I don't think I could recommend this game any more strongly. It's just pure fun.

I think the one in the arcade is Guitar Freaks, which they have a home version of. However, the controllers are not compatible.

I know some people who are into Guitar Freaks, but I've never played it myself. However, the people who like Guitar Freaks seem to take to Guitar Hero right away.

I had a blast playing last night. Finished Easy mode, and started on Medium difficulty. Medium brings a whole new challenge, as Easy mode only uses the lower 3 frets. Medium starts using the 4th fret, along with a whole new slew of notes in the same songs.

Medium also brings rewards, as you earn cash. The better you perform, the more you earn, and you can redeem your cash for unlockables like new guitars, new characters, new skins for your guitar, even new songs from underground bands.

Even after a decent amount of playing time, it's the type of game that continues to be challenging. And when it's not enough of a challenge (say, you go from a hard song back to an easy one), it's still loads of fun.

Its made by Harmonix Music Systems, Ive always been a big fan of their games... Apmplitude, Frequency... Now I gotta go get another one... After christmas....and spring break

If you have guitar experience, Easy and Medium should present no challenge, and should just be a primer for getting used to the SG controller. Hard and Expert difficulties should still challenge you. At the very least, you'll be able to have some relaxed fun at the lower difficulties.

It's done in a way that a total novice could learn it quickly, while a guitar expert could go in and just have fun with it.

Lol.. kinda like ddr right begginer, and light are easy then when your on heavy or standard like me it presents some difficulty.... =) Is the controller a guitar or what?

It's shaped like a Gibson SG. It's roughly 3/4 the size of a real guitar. It's got a strum bar to simulate the strings, buttons to simulate fret placement, and a whammy bar. It's also got an internal balance switch for Star Power mode, when you flip the guitar vertical for bonus points. ;)

sooo, if you get really good at the game, can you pick up a guitar and play it?

It definitely gives your fingers a workout, so I could see it being a decent fun way to strengthen your fingers for real guitar playing, but it is a VERY loose simulation of an actual guitar. It wouldn't be a 100% jump right into a real guitar, but it could be a stepping stone to propel someone into pursuing learning to play a real guitar.

also: will they teach you that sweet riff from "cemetary gates"?
Unfortunately, no. However, they do have a quite awesome Pantera offering in it's place... Cowboys From Hell.

No, it won't teach you string technique or anything like that.

Here's a picture of one of the controllers:

Really, you just press the button that corresponds with the note on the screen. It's not like playing a real guitar, but it gives you a taste of the experience in a video game.
It's an arcade game, not a learning tool. It might teach someone the hand-hand coordination required to play basic guitar (one hand strums vertically, the other plays the notes horizontally), and might motivate someone to get into guitar more than they would have otherwise, but it's not going to teach someone how to play the real thing by any stretch of the imagination.

My GF and I bought this game, two bundle packs, so we both can have the guitar. It cost us a lot!! but it was worth it, those tutorials actually help with some nice tricks that made the game easier. We also bought Taiko Drums, of course two bundle packs too, this game is pretty old but it's still worth looking for too if you like games like Guiter Hero. We got both maybe two months ago.

I can't believe I have missed this one for so long. I saw this when if first came out in a store and it was a BLAST to play there. Darn you DD, with that strong of a recomendation, I guess I will have to part ways with the money sometime soon . . .drat.
