Invoking the name “Martin Luther King†and screaming “Black Power!†a gang of up to 30 black teens attacked four white girls in Marine Park in what police are saying is not a bias crime.

The March 30 attack was a hot topic at state Senator Marty Golden’s recent public safety forum.

According to witnesses and parents of the victims, four young girls from St. Edmund’s had the day off from school due to Easter recess. They were playing basketball during dismissal from nearby Marine Park Junior High School, when several Marine Park students demanded to use the court.

After adults intervened and asked them to wait their turn, the teens left - but returned in a pack of up to 30, both boys and girls, and stormed into the park.

Witnesses say the attackers were all black and called their victims “white crackers†during the bloody melee, which raged for almost 20 minutes.

“This is not being looked at as a bias crime,†NYPD Deputy Inspector Kevin McGinn said at the meeting.

“When I pulled my car up to the park, I witnessed a pandemonium I’ve never seen in my life,†said Debbie, a mother of one victim who asked to remain anonymous for safety reasons.

Her daughter ran to the car, screaming, “They’re going to kill us,†Debbie recalled. My daughter was so scared and kids were running around like crazy.

Pursued by dozens of teens, some of the girls were “literally running into traffic to save their lives,†she said.

One girl made it as far as a nearby house, but was dragged by her hair back into the playground by a “wolf pack of children,†Debbie said.

The St. Edmund girls were bleeding and beaten to the point where they had cuts, scrapes, footprints and dirt all over them - and the attackers surrounded her car and started pounding on the windows as Debbie tried to herd the terrified children into her vehicle.

Two girls were hospitalized - one with a broken nose and one with a head injury, according to Edith, the mother of another girl.

According to Lt. Mark Molinari, from the 63rd Precinct, five of the assailants, who attend Marine Park Junior High School, were arrested and charged with misdemeanor assault. But since the attackers are all under the age of 16, they are facing charges in Family Court, and were arraigned last Friday.

“I always felt safe in the area and after hearing about such an incident, you start thinking what else could happen. These situations should not be happening, not in Marine Park, or anywhere else, and the safety of our kids should be of most importance,†said Denise Williams, a parent from Gerritsen Beach.

“It’s getting progressively worse in the community - these types of gangs are not only taking away our parks, they‚re ruining our neighborhoods,†said parent Cathy Miller.

“Nobody expects their child to go to a park and get beaten, with footprints on her head and arm, everyone just wants their child to be safe,†said Edith. “Everyone should have the right to be safe from teens, to small kids, to seniors, to mothers with strollers, no one should fear of being beaten while enjoying a day in the park.â€

Wow I have no idea what to think of that.

I'm not against blacks at all their cool as far as I'm concerned but when you hear of soemthing like this it makes you think, both with white and black cultures. Thirty blacks against four whites, they must have either been sick to do that or stoned, it doesn't matter what colour you are either way that's low and pathetic to attack in such a great number against four innocent girls who jsut wanted to play on a court...impatient ****s

you know, this type of thing happened in my high school all the time, where the black cliques would gang up on a couple of white kids, and then bam, kick their asses. for some odd reason, our school was strangely acceptant of it.

white people cant shout out hate crime because the second we do, they pull out the NAACP and johnny cochrin (SP? oh ****! nvm hes dead rofl)! they claim **** like "the white man is oppressing me yet again because i am black!" it doesnt have anything to do with the ****ing point that they actually performed a hate crime, it just matters because the concept of black rights has always been a sensitive subject.

i would venture to guess about 85% of the american youth ranging in the ages of 0-25 sees black people as an equal from the start. its only when they prove themselves wrong that we start developing our prejudgeces. yet for some reason, the black community still insists on blaming us for our ****ing past. i understand our ancestors treated them like ****, but its no ****ing reason to hold it against me. ****, i have more black friends than a guy in detroit, and im whiter than a ghost.

the court system, the law enforcement, everyone, is hesitant to go up against black dominant crimes against white people because the second they do the black community rises up against them saying that the entire case itself is just to opress the black people YET AGAIN. same thing goes when a white guy beats the **** out of a black guy, and gets charged with a hate crime. if the court rules against it, if the cops charge this black dude with a hate crime, the black community pulls together, they get the NAACP into it, rally against everyone saying they are racist, and good cops (and bad cops) lose their badges, precincts and police stations lose funding, and the court systems even lose funds sometimes.

now i understand the other side of the arguement to, that white people do opress blacks all the time. its understandable why they say this. there are people that act on their prejudgeces, and a lot of the times it is law enforcement, or people higher up. i understand that they are fed up.

i guess what im trying to say is the courts, the law enforcement, and everyone inbetween, shouldnt be looking at every case as an absolute white=hate crime, black=no hate crime.

i myself dont hold anything against black people, like i said, i have a **** load of black friends myself, i was raised to think we are all equal, and i will stand by it. so please, dont flame me saying im racist.. i guess this is just that sensitive of a subject..

sorry for the novel/essay <3

Great post!

And I pretty much agree with you. A person's skin colour or origin might have some effect on their character, but I always say, if you're going to judge someone, judge on an individual basis.

Just because some horrible criminal happens to be black doesn't mean that ALL black people are EXACTLY the same! Yes there is still racism in the world, but it doesn't help things to label such crimes as a racial hate thing! Then, people get the idea that those who were involved are a seperate 'group' that is to be hated...

A crime is a crime. If I ever happen to kill someone who is Chinese, it would be for personnal reasons against that INDIVIDUAL, NOT because for some reason I intend to erradicate all Chinese people!

(Hehe, did I scare you MrsD? And guys, don't take my example seriously. Just an example. Heck, I'm learning Chinese and intend to go to China some day, so if I really hated the people I should reconsider my logic... :p

Djeuve: Ah! Finally in China! EVERONE PREPARE TO DIE!!
Djeuve: :cussing: (x1)
Chinese people:  (x3 billion)
...
:boxing: (Get my **** kicked...)

)

Personally, I think the notion of a "Hate Crime" is idiotic. Why is it, if two white men go out for an evening of crime, they happen across me and my black friend. They kill us both. Who is going to go to my wife and my son, and say, "Sorry, but the guy who killed your husband is going to get less time than the guy who killed his black friend."

All violent crime is reprehensible. All crime against any human being is wrong, and it is offensive to say that crime against any other group or groups is worse than crime anyone not from that group or groups. Why is it "More of a crime" if I am white, and attack a black man as opposed to a white man? Is the black man's life worth more?

All of that being said, even though I am against the whole notion of "Hate Crimes", it is an outrage that it appears as though only white people ever get charged with it. I am not saying that any minority has never been charged with it, I am just saying I have never heard of it before. And this case in particular SCREAMS hate crime, and yet it is a simple matter of them saying, "No, it wasn't". That is a crime, because if you are going to have the laws on the books, enforce them equally!

And finally, why is it I never even heard of this case? Why is some abscure paper that I never heard of the outlet for this news story? Where is Al Sharpton? Where is the media "outrage"? Where is Katie Couric? Where is ABC or CBS? Why is this completely ignored?

Hahahah:laughing3 Djeuve!

One of my favorite South Park episodes is the one where Cartman gets arrested for a hate-crime after he throws a rock at Token on the playground.

I think if you are going to bother with a category of "hate-crime" you should make it applicable to EVERYONE...or else, the hate-crime law itself becomes a "hate-crime."

I think some of the things the hate-crime laws cover need the extra legislation to communicate the seriousness of the crime...like for example when horrible people spraypaint swastikas on synagogues, I think they should be punished more severly than someone who just spraypaints "Billy wuz here!"

the term "hate crime" is such a misnomer...

the way people act is like only white people can be racist...i think its because there was once a time when white people were higher up (well duh...) but what gets me is that people imply that people that black people cant be racist or any other minorty for hta matter

Its political correctness at its worst. :eusa_wall

I thought all violent crimes were, by thier nature, hateful?
So why don't I know about this story, I watch the news, oh wait Im sorry, at work we only get CBS, I havent watched the "news" in a long time.

There was a South Park episode last night that was about this very subject. It was very funny, and made a lot of sense. :eusa_danc

Wow. A thread where I agree with EVERYONE. This "Hate Crime" stuff is a bunch of crapola. IT is Political Correctness at its worst - it was developed to keep a certain group quiet, pure and simple.

Look - I have no problem with just about anyone but this **** with not being able to call someone a **** when there boys call them that, pisses me off. I can be called anything and can;t say **** about it. but the minute I call someone something my **** is gonna be shot off. Thats ****in bullshit. I have all kinds of people I hang with - white, PR, black, Jamacan - no **** betwen us but you still have to be careful wher you go and what you say not matter who your with. Sucks but thats the way it is

Hate crime is an unnecissary term crime is crime, it shouldn't matter who it's against.

That is ridiculous to think that only white people can be racist and perform hate crimes. Native people are pretty problematic with this as well, because the moment any white person says anything against them... for example: if their child punches out another child and you ask them to leave... (it happened) You are automatically labelled a racist. Its all because the "white man" keeps other races down.

This is why I always mark other on the race question on job apps. When they ask what I am I say American. If they tell me I cant do that, I find another job.

I think hate crime legislation has outlived its usefulness, just like affirmative action. When the legislation was written it served a purpose, but times change. If we are to progress to a truly "color-blind" society we must eliminate all laws that make any distinction based on ethnicity.

I have been a victim of hate crime. It was done by people who were black and I still can hang out with or have civil conversations with them. There are certain things I will not do with them, like have a relationship other than a handshake and even that bugs me. I am very afraid of being alone with a black man. If I have to go to the 9th floor of a building and the other person in the elevator is a black man I will use the stairs. Otherwise I get panicky and can't breath. I have done this. Am I racist? No. Do I condone the misstreatment of blacks or any other color? No. But I do think that we give some other colors a little more leway in everyday life because we are afraid of them screaming racism. It happens. I was fired from a job where I was the only white employee. I never screamed racism, because I knew that people would look at me like I was stupid, bring up that 300 years ago my family had slaves and then I would have every black person in the neighborhood after me and my family. It's never worth it for us to complain about the way we are treated. We get the worse penalties on hate crimes only because they will sue everyone else who didn't see it as bad as it is when they do it. They get less punishment because they have Quannel who ever he is and that preacher on their side. I would also like to see a full blooded white person apply and get a United Negro College Fund Scholership. They get the regular ones that we get, but have you ever heard of a white person gettin theirs? That would be interesting. Have I made any sense or have I reached the point of babbling?

Mustang, I am so sorry to hear that you feel this way. It must be terrible. Sorry that you had to go through whatever made you feel this way. :(

I am sure I will be over the fear one day. I try to do as much as I can to overcome it. But at the same time I don't want to push myself. I would hate to have a meltdown and ruin where I have gotten so far. It was pretty bad for a long time. It's not that I hate black people because of this, and I never tell my kids to not like them. I hate the people that did this to me and it is no one elses fault. My daughters best friend is black and she is a great person. The way my kids are with other people is also helping me to work past any reservations I have. But I just wanted to tell that to the post to show that some people do have a reason to hate, but you cannot let the hate rule you. Be mad with the person you are mad at, but leave the others out of it. By the way the guys who did the crime against me got probation, no jail time. I wonder if they even think about what they did. Over time it will get better.
