My DH was reading the July 2011 Money Magazine today and there was a poll/stat page in it regarding spending money on food.

The most interesting stat was that people spend "$278 A WEEK on food for a family of four who eats a variety of meats and fresh produce".

Seriously that is $1,112 a month!

In small print at the bottom of the page it does say that polls were conducted in New York City in March 2011.

I sure hope that couponing will always keep me from having to spend anywhere close to that much money on groceries.

My number has been going up due to the lack of grocery deals. But lately I think I spend about $300/month for a family of 5. I do still have a stockpile I am utilizing.

How much do you spend a month on groceries?

Depends...sometimes around 40 bucks a wk. sometimes much less..there are only 3 of us though and a dog so that makes a difference..plus I use OTC meds like zegerid, etc. so that cost is factored into my grocery bill!

I havn't been couping much this summer so It's prolly a high of $75/wk.

I was only figuring food/ HBA. Our meds, booze, dog food, etc. go higher.

I can easily spend $50-$100 a week just on produce and lunchmeat. There are no coupons for that and I am shopping at Valli Produce which has pretty good prices.

We don't eat many things in boxes which is what lots of the coupons are for, not even cereal.

I have 4 boys ages 7,13,14 and 16 and I know it will only get worse.

Ours is higher for a family of 6 - $120/week but I don't have a ton of stockpile room and don't purchase extra papers very often. My grocery budget includes things like batteries too. We maybe eat out $50 a month.

I am spending around $100 a week total for everything I buy at a grocery store, target, walmart, or drugstore. I am like Mary, 3 hungry boys & lots of fresh produce & meats, etc.

We do not eat out with the kids AT ALL. My DH and I eat out 2x a month. The kids get their fill of fast and fast-ish food with their other parents.

And this is not directed specifically at anyone in this thread, but people really underestimate what they spend on food unless they write down every expenditure for a while. Couple years ago I thought I was spending around $140 a week on groc, turned out it was around $200-220 when I actually started tracking OOP.

I budget $75 a week for 7 people. We are trying to eat more fresh fruits and vegetables lately and I try to use gift cards (like the $10 Kelloggs, $10 John Frieda survey which had to have the peelies for) and rebate money to help with the cost of them.

You're right about keeping track of everything. I know someone who doesn't include chips in her grocery budget because she considers them extras. I say if you eat it it goes in the budget (that includes m&ms too!)

I try to use my CC (mainly Discover) for everything. I do pay it off every month. It is how I try to keep track of my actual costs. I'm probably a month behind now in tracking it though.

I agree, we have seven plus a dog. I would guess it is about $100 - $ 125.00 a week. Everyone takes their lunch to work, so 8 sandwiches a day, plus snacks and fresh fruit. It adds up fast! We don't eat out as a family, hubby and I about twice a month with coupons and gift cards or deal.

I think $100 week, family of five. I don't do much deal chasing in the summer, too much to shop with three children. I hope to chop that is half once school starts. :)

We are a family of 7 and I do some small scale couponing. I spend on average $150/week for everything (food, HBA, diapers, alcohol).
