Is art less necessary than science?

In a more general definition, art is something that requires a certain practical knowledge to be executed. Thus, art is a synonym of 'technique' and opposes itself to 'chance'. In a more specific definition, it is the activity of the artist, who creates works in order to exhibit them; so they can be viewed, heard, etc.

As for science, its idea is that it is consisted of a theorical knowledge, whose objective is to explain the causes of some phenomenon and to formulate laws depending on when/how these happen. (although nowadays, the word 'science' more often refers to a way of pursuing knowledge)

Also, I remind you that 'necessary' means 'required' or 'essential'.

I am curious about your answers on this debate. :3

I prefer science to art so my answer would be science is more important. now, looking overall, they are both important as they can both sustain your future: you can discover to be a true genious in art or to be a scientist.
Since i suck at art, science is soooo much important to me.

no I think art is just as necessary most people with scientific mind turn out to be good artist one of the main an obvious one being leonardo da vinci

art has and always will be incredibly important. for ages it has been a way to communicate universally with no language barrier and record important events. without artists, a lot of history would be left unknown.

Your answers are interesting, but I can't stop noticing how you are always considering the importance of art and science in society over the importance of those in a more personal level. :P

Art and science are both incredibly important to humanity- both (especially art) contribute heavily to culture, and both (especially science) advance us. I honestly feel both are of equal merit. Without one or the other we'd still be very primitive as a species in comparison to where we are today.

Without Art we wouldn't be able to put a face to some of the people who've discovered some of the most important things in Science. Art is also very important in a cultural sense as people of any age, intelligence or nationality can appreciate it together whilst Science is important to the advancement of the human race and having a deeper understanding of the universe. If either one of them were to be removed then the world would be a very different place - just imagine the world without music or without an understanding of fundamental forces like gravity.

I disagree that art has a skill requirement - kids who are finger painting are still creating art. It's a way of expressing yourself, creatively. I mean, people make fantastic portraits out of toast (I can't remember who originally started the trend)

I'd argue that Art is more important than Science. Of course, me being on an Art course makes me totally biased here :P

I've always believed that art is a form of science and vice-versa.
Without art, science would be difficult for some (probably a lot) of people to understand. Yet, without science, art would be very hard to convey.
