Is POKER a sport?

Why would it be a sport? It is a card game. There is no athleticism involved.

Most consider NASCAR a sport. Those guys just hold a steering wheel and keep turning left all day - no athleticism. What about Golfer's, are they athletes?

Hey, I'm not saying Poker is a sport. I'm just saying the "no athleticism" argument is a poor one.

Of'coarce poker is not a sport. However, I can assure you, many poker players want it to be considered a sport and are promoting it as such.

It looks as if Poker will become an Olympic Sport... kinda, sorta...

A lot of poker players desperately want poker to be recognized as a sport. They have a 'poker tour' and very much want that tour to be respected the way the golf's PGA tour is respected.

I think poker becoming an Olympic Sport will never happen but, I have seen stranger things happen.

No, it's not a sport, same as any card games (apart from 56 Card Pickup) aren't sports because they involve absolutely no exercise whatsoever.

Taking a look at this technically:

According to dictionary.com a sport is:
1. an athletic activity requiring skill or physical prowess and often of a competitive nature, as racing, baseball, tennis, golf, bowling, wrestling, boxing, hunting, fishing, etc.

A game is:
3. a competitive activity involving skill, chance, or endurance on the part of two or more persons who play according to a set of rules, usually for their own amusement or for that of spectators.

Poker's a game, following those definitions. Common sense, Poker's still a game.

If that nonsense gets recognized as a sport, I will lose ALL HOPE of the meaning of the word "sport". That would be ridiculous and a travesty.

When people say sports, they thin of an athlete who trains and is in good physical shape. Not really a sport. It does take training and discipline, but not an athlete. Sorry

For me poker it's just a game, and I enjoy playing it online. Too much of the luck needed to be classified as a sport.

My thoughts exactly! Playing poker is all about luck and honestly I don't even like the game :sad2:

Uhhh, those guys are pulling on that wheel with 60 lbs of force because there is no power steering, and it takes that much effort to keep the car on the track. There is also no air conditioning and they can lose up to 12lbs in a single race.

That takes crazy conditioning and endurance, it's not like taking the station wagon out for a Sunday cruise.

Poker is a game. It's not a sport. I consider a sport as exercising your body and becoming more fit by getting off the couch and being physical.

It's not a sport and neither is chess. I have no idea why anyone would argue that it is. ESPN also shows the spelling bee too, so the ESPN argument isn't really fitting.

It's not all luck, it's a skill game. The best players will come out on top after a large enough sample size when it's all said and done.

Poker is a card game. It is the competitiveness of the game that puts it on a level of sports. It requires intellect and stamina, but not the physical excellence that sports requires. Another thing it has in common with sports is that the players get paid very well, on the par with professional sports for some. 'Although it is a card game and not a sport, it does get the recognition it deserves and it is very entertaining and exciting like sports is. You also experience building of character like with sports.

For me I don't think it's a sport but then again other people say chess is a sport, games of the generals is a sport. Anyway, I don't care about Poker, I am not a gambler and I only play it sometimes on Facebook.

No as others have said poker is a game and not a sport. There is no physical skill involved and there are even some that would go as far to say there is little to no skill involved, just luck. I wouldn't agree with that statement as there is quite a bit of skill involved in reading other players but it's definately not a sport.

Poker is not a sport, at least for me. It is a game! They are trying to become a sport, but i would not support it. It would be better to classify the card games, chess and other this type of activities under a new name. Do no confuse them with sport.

Naaaa it is a card game simple as that... casino games are not sports. The worst spam though.

I Love poker... I love to play it, and watch it. But is it not a sport. I call it an RTS (Real Time Strategy)

Not a sport, but very difficult and occasionally worth watching. I just have a hard time saying anything that isn't at all (literally zero) physically demanding is really a 'sport'.

I also think that poker is not a sport. In sports, you need to exert physical force to win, which we don't do in poker.

Yes, poker is a game, not a sport.

No, it's not. If we go by this way of thinking, soon masturbating will be a sport.
