I've never had difficulties with this machine and now suddenly it's p*@## me off.
I'm running rh6.1
Machine works great normally, but
when trying to telnet or ftp to it....it hangs for a good 6 minutes before a login prompt. I've rebooted, restarted telnetd and inetd.
Still hangs
I would have a possible conclusion........but.........httpd works fine!
Also when I'm on the machine, an I try to go somewhere via http or ftp, it hangs there too.
It's driving me nuts!
Any recommendations...I've been meaning to upgrade to 6.2, but would rather not atm.
Thanks
Check the contents of /etc/resolv.conf and make sure the search path is correct and your nameservers are set up right. Should look something like this:
search your.domain.com
nameserver XXX.XXX.XXX.XXX #ip of first nameserver
nameserver YYY.YYY.YYY.YYY #ip of second, etc...
I'd also check /etc/hosts and make sure at least "127.0.0.1 localhost" is in there.
What did you change when this started happening? Anything? Did your ISP change something?
Hope this helps.
If you still have no luck, feel free to AIM me.

Thought of something which is potentially more relevant to your situation. If you're running your own nameserver, you should verify that it's working correctly. If you are (running an NS) and it's not working/running, you may also want to verify your machine hasn't been broken into. I read about a month ago about bind-related exploits which typically kill bind after being used.
Well, I'm just making random guesses now, so post back with more info.
Good luck.

heh
well
you were right
i actually realized my problem late late last night
it seems that the ips for the local dns servers were changed
and seeing as how the machine is behind a router it didn't know how to get the new ips
i was messing around in the router settings and saw the dns ips and was like "those look a bit different"
thanks
