Mama Robin.....

has built her nest in the bend of our down spout on our garage. It is right by our back door, and it is a very busy area. The kids play basket ball, our grill is there not to mention it is the main exit from our house. Do we have to tip toe? I can't understand why she would put her nest there. When I left yesterday, it was a few pieces of dried grass hanging, when I got home she had created a master piece! I don't want to stress her out, any suggestions. Should we just act as normal?
 
I'm no bird expert but...

Last year a Robin built her nest by downspout on our little kids playground. That play ground had screaming, running, goofy kids on it 4-5 hours a day. The kids would wiggle the spout and yell/jump trying to look inside the nest. Its location was also very close to the parking lot so cars coming and going all day long. We tried to keep kids/curios teachers/parents away but didn't have much luck.

Momma only squalked at the kids a few times after babies were born. She had 4 or 5 babies in that nest. Might not have been the best place for her to built but it was a good home for 1 season. (we torn it down this winter and she hasn't been back)
 
Dumb Birds! :lol: I'm just kidding. I love that she built her nest there, but didn't she scope our the area before building? I hope she stays, glad to know we don't have to tip toe!
 
Not a bird...but we had a duck build a nest right next to our front steps last year. She/He would be there all day/night sitting on the eggs. Was never bothered by the kids coming and going out the front door. It's also directly next to our driveway, never bothered by the kids playing. The only thing that made her mad was when we hired a painter to paint the exterior trim and he was trying to paint right next to her, she attempted to bite him a few times. Then he held up a piece of plywood to create a barrier and all was good. Of course the day the chicks decided to hatch one of the kids had a doctors appointment. Saw them starting to peck out in the morning, gone for two hours to the doctors, came home to empty shells and nest. Was a little bummed that we didn't get to watch them fully hatch and waddle across the street to the pond (at least I'm assuming that's where they went). Was hoping they'd be back again this year, but no luck.
 
Last year a robin built her nest in the wreath my neighbour has on her front door. She left it there and the chicks hatched no problems, but my neighbour did try to minimize use of that door and go in/out through the garage instead.
 
I'm not a fan of robins/birds building a nest ON or in a strategic place near my house..... shocking, right? I'll tell you why...........

We've had a robin that built a nest in the lovely magnolia tree right by the front door every year... ok, I don't know if it was the same robin, but every year, same crook of same tree,... maybe they were passing it along to the babies in their genetic info, idk.... we weren't bothering the mama , but it got impossible to even go to the front door after a while :gah: .... she would fly and swoop down so close above your head, you could just about feel the breeze. I've discouraged nest building in that particular tree ever since. There are plenty of other options, believe me.

We've had robins build a nest on two different window sills..... while it was cool and awesome to watch at the time, after recently watching a show called "Infested" on Animal Planet this year, i'm not allowing nest building ON the house anymore, if I can help it.

One of the houses was infested with bird mites, which came from a bird nest built along/in their gutter. The birds were removed, the nest was removed, things were cleaned, the house was fumigated/treated and STILL the bird mites took over the house and bit their humans at night; they're parasites and need blood to reproduce. I know this was a serious infestation and probably not very common, but the people were unable to eradicate them and left their home.

All that said, I have some AMAZING pictures I took of baby robins a few years back... I'll have to dig them up and post ♥♥♥.
 
We have birds that keep trying to build a nest in our grill and in DH's pickup truck.

A few years ago, a bird built a nest in the vent that leads to our powder room...well the dumb bird somehow made its way into our walls. We had to cut the wall open to get the bird out..... Then a day later, same bird (after patching and painting our wall) made its way back into our wall...now our powder room walls are inner walls in the center of our house...We had to cut open the wall again and grab the bird...well the bird got scared and flew around my **** house before I could open the front door and force it out. Since then, we have used a gutter screen to cover the vent. Birds still try to get in there! I have SIX trees (so far) in my back yard...why can't they pick one of those?!?!?!?

birds...stay away!
 
Well now I feel bad....my sisters all came over today to make our traditional Purple Horseradish and we do this outside (because it can't be done inside, too smelly) anyway all the teens, 7 of them were playing basketball. Momma bird didn't come back once! I hope now that it has quieted down she comes back.
 
I would highly recommend that you discourage her from trying to build there.

1. Very Messy......you will have straw/nesting stuff all over the ground/deck/porch.
2. Very Messy .....you will have robin poop everywhere. (Hope there isn't a Mulberry bush nearby!)
3....After the babies hatch....momma can get Very protective and WILL divebomb anyone who gets too close.
4....Bird Lice/Mites.

....but go ahead, let her nest there...:snicker:...Nature is fun...:snicker:

Now for the "easy remedy"..... Clean out the nest, and hang strips of tin foil around the gutter....easy peasy!

YOUR MEAN! :lol: the only thing that bothers me is the bird lice/mites and I won't be to happy if she swoops at me either. We had a robin built a nest on our deck at work, it was cool, I even got some real nice shots of the babies before they flew the coop.
 
Sorry if you think I was MEAN........I didn't think I was, I have been through this many times, and the only thing that worked was the hanging of strips of tinfoil in the area to scare her off. She made her nest 10ft. away from the door after that. Still in the area, but not ****ting on our heads as we went out the door.
 
Every year we seem to get a birds nest in our downspout. Every year my husband has to take apart the gutters (they have rivets in them) some how they get up around the bend and they get stuck up there. The sound is like finger nails on a blackboard. A couple of years we have missed them when the were stuck only to find them perished when our gutter has gotten clogged.

I know your not MEAN, that's why I put the :lol: there! I just don't have the Heart to go and take her nest down. I will keep the tin foil in mind for next year! :flowers:
 
How does one keep the birds from pooping in their pool? Serious problem in the spring time for us. The birds release right over our pool. Told my husband he was crazy but last year I saw it with my own two eyes. Lots of poo too (lots of birds). Have had to chase ducks and geese out also. Does an owl work? Thinking of putting one on my deck. HELP!!!!
 
I guess the Nest comes down.....I haven't seen her in a week! Good Thing I stocked up on Tin Foil!
 
I took these pictures 10 years ago..... the nest was in an evergreen at the end of the driveway.....
low enough where I didn't need a ladder to take pics (which means pretty low :giggles: )

I love the Pic's Cookiemom. Isn't it amazing what nature can do....that nest is a work of art!
 
sooooo sweet cookiemom!! :bliss: I love your favorite one.. love them all actually.. but I think my faves are the last two where they're all adolescents and totally crowding each other. Not enough room!! move out!

We have a robin's nest in our front yard this year, in a tree near the front door. I use the front door a lot, and the parent birds haven't bothered me yet. I just noticed the nest yesterday or today. I wonder how long it's been there?
