New Dog, need opinions!

Wow, that's a long life for a large dog! Kudos to you for showing her kindness. :flowers:

We had an ACD when my hubby and I were first married. Very high maintenance dog. We ended up bringing her to an ACD rescue place because we couldn't handle her anymore. If you do end up getting one, make sure you get a herding ball. I think Foster and Smith online sells them. It's a hard plastic ball about the size of a beach ball that they can "herd".

Why don't you try Will County Humane? They are a great place, although they are pretty picky about who they adopt to. Nothing bad, per se, they just want to make sure that their animals are well taken care of, so you can't blame them. We got our 2nd dog from them and are very happy. Even though we had to do a few things, we are extremely happy with them and our little chiweenie.

TLC does not update their lists very often, so just b/c you saw them on Petfinder, doesn't mean they will still be there. I've looked on Petfinder, found a dog, went in and the dog has not been there. And I know for you it will be a long haul to get there. We got one of our cats there.

Both places get new animals from kill shelters down south 1x a week.

Whatever you do, don't go to Plainfield Humane on 59 near 143rd. They are ridiculousl overpriced and they get you with all the little "extras." First they get you to fall in love with a pet. Then, if you have any pets at home, they all have to be current on their vaccines and you need to bring proof. Not current? You can bring them in to us and we can vaccinate them for you for the cost of an arm and a leg. Adopting a dog and have a cat? Your cat has to have a "special shot" so that the dog doesn't catch anything from the cat and vice versa (my vet says that is bogus). Need current poop sample for worms (within 6 months). Haven't had it? Well, you can bring it in and we can test it for you. Oh, you have to buy a year's worth of heartworm from them. And do you want pet insurance? They highly recommend it and they are not responsible if the animal gets sick and dies if you don't have it. Ready to bring your dog home? Did you make sure to bring a leash and collar that fits? No? Well, we just so conveniently happen to have them here for you to purchase. So the cute little dog, who's price varies depending on the breed/age, will skyrocket by the time you are done and have signed the paperwork. And yes, I did learn this the hard way, as did a friend of mine. (But, I do happen to love my ADHD dog).

OMG you hit the nail on the head with the Plainfield Humane society.
They nickel and dime ya and if you want a puppy they are usually 300 to 400 plus extras. Saw a couple of dogs there but just coulnt pay the price.
Thats why I love Cache Creek due to the fact $250 cash and your out the door. Reputable nice people.
 
oh and Petco and Pet supplies plus run low cost vaccines
Petco is every other sunday and Pet Supplies plus is a certain Wednesday a month.
My younger dog that is 15lbs got all shots and tags and a year of heartworm for $113.

We had just put our dog to sleep 2 years ago this Christmas and didn't want to wait for them to come up and bring their animals. (Can't stand waiting for something I want so bad). But if I could have waited, I did see some dogs that were so adorable at the time. But we love our nutjob dog
 
Well thanks for all the input! I haven't read through all the posts yet. But I did agree too that the cattle dog was too much for our life.

After searching through pages and pages on petfinder.org, I found a dog that I liked at the Plainfield humane society. We went this morning and she was great. Good with the kids and everything. So we decided to get her. I really hope she works out. I am still leary of strange dogs with the kids, but she seemed alright at the shelter with them. My husband went to get her now.

Hahaha just read this now, this is where we went! It was like $230 total, the dog was $199 plus the 1 year of heart worm meds. We brought in our own leash!

Awww what a cutie pie! Congrats!!!

Ok now down to brass tacks............they worded it nicely that she's a nut (hyper, jumping, etc) and she's young and high energy so she's gonna need regular running and lots and lots of training to break her from the jumping. The dog I had growing up jumped a lot and we never trained her. I remember peeps coming to the house and being annoyed by her jumping (I was just a kid so my parents should've trained her).

Awwww, she's so cute. She looks like our dog Trixie (who we got from there), except our girl is more brown where yours looks to be white/tan. If you ever get out to a dog park in Joliet/Plainfield, LMK. Our dogs would probably go great together.

Glad to see you made it out of there without having to sacrifice one of your kids.
