Anyone have one? I'm thinking of getting an m100, I could really use one for a few things, but I really really do not need any bells and whistles, nor do I need/want to spend a lot of money.

My brother got an m100 for Christmas last year, and he still absolutely loves it, and says I shouldn't have any problem even with the measly amount of memory those things have (2 megs).

Gonna see if there are any good deals in the Sunday paper tomorrow

i used my friend's m100 for a while.. it's pretty good..

if i'd get one i'd get one w/ more memory.. cuz i like the small palm games.. you can't put that many extra programs on and still have enough storage space if you get a 2MB one..
 
I've lived by my HandSpring Visor when I was consulting. Now 2megs will most likely be enough for most people, but I was barely getting by with 8megs. I had grabbed a mapping program and loaded it up with very detailed maps of the cities I was in. The maps used up around 4Megs or so. I only had 400K leftover with all my programs loaded.

I would say not to waste the money on the m100. The screen is too small, the memory is too limited, and the plastic casing is prone to cracking.

I would also agree that if you plan on using it for anything serious, get an 8MB model. Don't limit yourself to 2MB if you can afford not to.

A good low-cost alternative is the Handspring Visor Deluxe. I got mine when they first came out, and it's never given me a problem. They're much cheaper than when I got it, and well worth the money.
The Springboard slot is more gimmick than practical feature, unless you can actually find a module you can use. The processor is a little slower than it's Palm counterparts, but when you're just using it as an address book, it's more than fast enough. Heck, I use it for games, and it's fast enough.

WaterB> The iPaq's are okay, but keep in mind that they don't run on PalmOS. The real appeal of them is the hi-res color screens and MP3 capabilities. Of course, they're much more expensive than a typical PDA, and are typically considered to be part toy-part tool. It's basically a technogeek toy.

Let me explain to you why I want one, and maybe you'll change your tune.

I am a list freak, I make several lists for various reasons every day, and I can never manage to keep them in the same place, and I lose at least one per day. I also write phone numbers on little scraps of paper and either lose them or have no idea whose phone number it is when I find it later. Probably 60% of my use of the thing would be grocery and other shopping lists.

I have no need for games, and the only use I would have for maps is if I could download some driving directions from MapQuest instead of printing them out.

I will not use it for scheduling, I am required to keep my calendar on my PC at work and I also have a paper planner, which I have no plans to get rid of. I really don't plan to use it for anything work related at all.

I do not need e-mail capability. If I am ever important enough to need 24/7 access to e-mail no matter where I am, I would insist that whoever needs me to be constantly in touch would pay for the **** thing.

I love the Handspring Visors, but I haven't seen one for less than $200, which is more than I'm willing to spend on a glorified memo pad.

hermanm&gt; If you can still find them, and can forego the Springboard slot on the Handsprings, you might want to see if you can still find a Palm IIIxe floating around. Once the m500 and m505 came out, the prices on the older Palms plummetted, and the IIIxe ended up being dirt cheap.
I got one for my dad and it ended up running $150 after rebate for an 8MB PDA.

The rebate might not be around anymore, though, and with Handspring's price drops, the Visor Deluxe may still be the best bang-for-the-buck.

hermanm&gt; I use it for many of the same things that you are. Of all of your uses, I didn't see one that you would need to coordinate with your PC, so I don't see why you would need anything more than a non-connected organizer in the first place.

The main feature of Palm organizers is their ability to sync with a PC. If you don't need that, you probably can do just fine with a non-standardized organizer.

However, if you do want to do things like coordinate your schedule with your PC, keep your address book coordinated between your PC and your PDA, and be able to run small programs and utilities, then you're looking at a Palm Pilot. If you're not going to use the scheduling functions, you're effectively cutting out roughly 1/4 of the usability of the PDA.

And FWIW, the Visor is $129 directly from Handspring, and the Visor Deluxe is $169. Heck, you can get a Visor Platinum directly from Handspring for under $200 right now.

Duhhh, ok, this made no sense to me, so obviously I don't know anything about these PDA things yet...what is a "non-connected organizer", and why would I want to coordinate things with my PC...the only thing I use my home PC for is web browsing, email, Microsoft Money, and the very occasional Word or Excel document.

But if there's a lower-end Handspring, I might look into that. My brother had told me he'd seen m100's down to $100 or less some places, including one deal where it was $100 plus came with a 40 gig PC hard drive. I didn't have that kind of luck today, so it's going to be at least another week before I actually take the plunge and buy anything.

hermanm&gt; A non-connected organizer is one that doesn't hook up and sync with your PC. IOW, it's a self-contained organizer, like an electronic version of your paper organizer.

As for why you would want to connect your organizer with your PC:
You could sync your schedule in Outlook with your PDA so you could always have the same schedule on your PC and with you on the road.

You can sync your contacts so you wouldn't have to keep 3 address lists with you at any given time.

You could jot down any info on your PC where it's easier to enter information by using the keyboard than to enter it in the Palm using Graffiti.

If you don't need these types of functions, you don't need a Palm, unless you're going for the geek factor. I have a $30 Sharp pocket organizer with a little keyboard on it that will handle all of the functions you need.

To me, it doesn't sound like you have a specific need for a Palm PDA.

Outlook? Nope, don't have Outlook at home OR at work. You should see what we use at work, it's a proprietary software package built in 1987 that is DOS-based and run off a mainframe. So even though I have Windows NT at work, I have to open up this mainframe connection for internal e-mail and calendar. It's pretty silly, if you ask me.

Maybe I'll just save for a little bit and go with the Handspring Deluxe. I know it sounds silly to need to save for $169, but I don't make as much money as some of you tech guys

All Palm OS handhelds can also use Palm Desktop, which is a seperate application that acts as a desktop interface for the Palm. Although it's not as full-featured as Outlook for the tasks, it will function as a PC-based address book, calendar/schedule, etc.

Actually $169 is a bit much, especially for something you don't entirely need. I never had a PDA until I was on the road, and getting tired of having to carry around a stack of papers to keep the illussion of being organized. And even then, I only justified my $400 purchase with the fact that I had worked overtime with pay and worked the expense report to entirely cover the cost.

I still do not have a cell phone or pager. Have had no need for em. Though I'll be buying a cell phone soon, but more for the free long-distance minutes.

That's very true, BRiT...if I really *needed* one, I'd have already justified the expense and taken the money from elsewhere in my budget.

This is probably the sort of thing I sock away $25 or $50 from each paycheck, until I get there.

That would mean I could have one by Thanksgiving at the latest...and maybe by then the price will drop
