Parents of difficult eaters

my best friend has kids that I love. They are so sweet but when they come over I am a wreck because they are really picky. I never know if what is on the menu is going to be acceptable.

Each of my kids have a handful of things I know they don't like. For those things I make them eat one bite, then they can be done. For dd it's rice, she doesn't really like any kind of rice, so she has to eat one bite of rice, finish her meat and veggie, then she can have desert.

That is me I hate rice reminds me of magets.... Never would eat it NEVER mom one time made BBQ's sloppy joes put some rice in it thinking I would not see it. WRONG I saw it would not eat it (by then I was 17 and just got my own food) lol....

what type of bread, how would you like it toasted..........light, med.........what side would you like and what would you like to drink?

you think I'm joking?.............DS requested his toast be toasted a lil darker today than yesterday. :surrender:

Cracking down on it will be hard the first few days, but make it easier in the long run.

White or wheat would be fine.
Just don't burn it.
Caffeine free diet Coke or Pepsi.

Easier said then done. My youngest is underweight and extremely picky so I feed him whatever he'll eat. The only fruit he'll eat is applesauce so he gets that everyday. Today so far he's had two frozen waffles with a lil choc. syrup drizzled on top, applejuice and two hot dogs (no bun).
 
Billy is a picky eater too. I wanted to stand hard ground when he was little, but DH said...... He'll eat it when he eats it. He said he will eventually grow to like the stuff.

He has gotten a little better..... But, I wish I had stood my ground. When I was growing up.... Mom made 1 meal, you ate it or you went hungry. PERIOD. And yes, if you went on a hunger strike...... It would get put in the fridge for your next meal.

Billy is oddly enough, more apt to eat healthy stuff and resist the unhealthy stuff. He just started eating pizza, ice cream, and some cake... But, not so much. He still won't eat burgers.

He loves fresh veggies, not cooked. He loves fruit. He could live off of celery, carrots, broccoli, etc. He loves cheese, but not Cheese Wiz (just found that out this week). Chicken nuggets and fries at my house are made in the NuWave oven, not fried.... So not AS bad for you.

His "bad" stuff tends to be carbs... Crackers, rice, pasta. He would sit and eat just a bowl of plain noodles every night if you let him.





Anywhoooo.. It will work out in the end, but how long do you want to wait/fight?.

By side I mean would you like chips with that or pretzels or what?
 
We do our best to stand our ground with DD4, and she's not too picky. There are things she doesn't like that much, but we just say that this is what we're having, and now is the time to eat. Our first threat is usually to withhold dessert, which works *most* of the time. Although there have been times when she just kept farting around and didn't eat very much, then threw a fit at bedtime that she was hungry. Ummm...sorry, but we warned you. It was your choice to not eat.

One of my biggest struggles has been training the grandparents, especially my mom. Mom has a tendency to keep offering DD new things out of the fridge over the course of the meal. I keep telling her to stop, because whatever new thing you offer her will almost always seem better than what's on her plate. With DH's parents, the problem is mostly offering her seconds of something they know she really likes before she finishes other things on her plate. Then when I say something, I'm the "bad guy." It's gotten some better with my mom, but DH doesn't really support me with his family, so that part hasn't really changed.
 
Ok, we're out of this phase and my kids are older. When I just couldn't take it anymore, I started a cereal rule. If they didn't like what I made, they could have cereal. They had to get all the stuff themselves, I wasn't getting up. So I did get a smaller pitcher for the milk and some plastic bowls so they could handle it.

I also did NOT get any sweet cereals. Regular Cheerios and other stuff like that was all I had.

After a few times, they liked the taste of the regular food more than the cereal. They also enjoyed sitting at the table instead of getting it themselves.

I STILL go through the "I don't like this" at the table, but it's eat or go hungry. I have big eaters so they suck it up.
 
Wow, mrsred, thanks for posting this. We have been having the same issues with my dd who is the same age as your DD. She will eat grapes, raw carrots, broccoli(with dip of course!), really most any fruit or veggie. But try to get her to eat pasta, pizza(yes pizza!), a sandwhich she is at the table for on hour!!!! I don't let her get up until she is done eating, but I hate that it takes sooooo darn long. Some days I make her sit there until she eats, other days I just let her go. I know I should be more consistent, but with schedules, etc. it just happens.

Now my ds who is just over a year old, will eat anything you put in front of him and eat just as much or more than his sister.

And what is even more frustrating is that I usually go home at lunchtime and spend the entire hour making sure both of them are fed because grandma can't seem to get them to eat. And she is the first to complain that they are too thin and need a different pediatrician. And told my dh that I am trying to keep my daughter skinny. :pout:

I'm a super picky eater and my mom said all I would eat was one egg and a banana a day and I survived!

I don't have any advice for you. I guess if they are hungry enough he will come around and eat the pasta.
