Pre-School for your child?

Did you put your child in pre school? My DD will be 4 next month, she is not in pre-school yet. Mainly b/c she wasn't 100% potty trained by the start of school in the fall. Another reason was b/c of the cost. It is expensive!

I was looking online today how to register. I saw they had a 2.5hr 2 day class for 4 year olds, which I was happy to see b/c it is cheaper than the 3 day class. I assumed we were a resident of Channahon park district, b/c it is literally like 5 minutes from us. But we are not, so we have to pay the higher costs. It is like $200 differnce. $700 something we would have to pay for the 2.5 hour class, $1089 for the longer one.

I don't have an extra $1000 lying around!

I know she needs to be in some type of class and I know she would enjoy it, once she got over the initial shock.

I am just curious - how many of you skipped pre-school for your child and they still turned out to be a well adjusted kindergartener???
 
I am a fan of preschool. It is good for the child socially and developmentally. Also, my son was tested for kindergarten and I was told he wasn't 100% ready. The school recommended I start him a year later, which I did. During what would have been his kindergarten year, he went to pre-k (or preschool). They told me that starting a child when they aren't ready could cause the child to struggle through all of their school years. It was the best decision for him and he is now going on 16, a good student and fits in well socially. Plus, I get another year at home with him before he goes off to college. :-)
 
Jonny is the youngest kid in his grade, so YES I put him in preschool. He turned 4 right before the school year started. I thought it was important because he is an only child and at the time, was mostly around adults, not kids. He was reading before he when to preschool, so it sending him to preschool was not for education, it was strictly for social interaction.
 
Y.E.S! Have the Grundy County Coop screen her and see if she "qualifies" for the program thru the MIN school dist.

DD 12 and DD10 went to Channahon Park Dist...I was pleased.
DD 7 went to a home day care who did preschool in her home....it was OK.

For sure I'd send her! BUT Look into the school Dist!!!!!
 
I do agree she needs the socialization. I will end up sending her - will have to dig the money up somewhere!

I know some ppl skipped pre school all together. I guess if you average on per day, it is really not too much and it would be so good for her!
 
ALSO look into the Minooka United Methodist Church program. I've heard great things about it (several years ago anyhow)
 
There should be fliers coming home soon about the Grundy coop screening. Be sure to take her. They seem to "qualify" lots of kids!!! :)
 
Unless you are opposed to a church preschool why not send her to one of those? They are often cheaper and there are so MANY of them out there! My DD went to preschool thru a church and it was much cheaper. I do think it is good for them. They learn social skills and sometimes learn to write their name, etc. I would try to do it!

Yes someone else mentioned this to me earlier today. I have to check it out. What exactly would make her qualify for her? I dont think she has any special needs??

I have looked into them also, more expensive than the park district!
 
Not familiar with your area, but I always thought the school district was supposed to provide it. Also, if you have nearby colleges, check there. Governors State University near me had a really great preschool program that I sent DS to, because I liked it better than the school district.
 
DS3 isn't 100 percent potty trained (no #2 without a pull-up), but we still put him in preschool through the park dist (2.5 hrs twice a week). He doesn't do day care so preschool has really helped him.

NO WAY! more expensive?!?!? WOW. Check out that new church on RTE 6 too..they seem to advertise openings for stuff...although I know nothing at all about it.

Kids can qualify for speech and language (not speaking enough words/sentences)...and *i think* social/shy... Not sure. But the screening is good just to know where your kid stands. If she does get in, I'm pretty sure transportation would be provided.

If I hear anything soon...I'll think of you and send a PM. I can ask around. I chat with some of the teachers out here too.

According to their site, $140 per month at the church. The same amount of days/hours at the park district is $1089 (non-resident). So that is cheaper if you calculate in 9 months.

I will have to check that out. Is it just through Grundy County? I am going to research it. I am assuming you live out here too :) Let me know if you dig up anything else - thanks a bunch :)
 
looked up other church in Channahon. $1800 tuition plus fees for 3 year old program 3x week! wow.
 
My DS7 went to preschool because both of us were working and it was great for him. They assessed that he would be excellent in school and so far so good.

I am home now and with my ds2 1/2 and we are having a great time. He is learning alot, I set up playdates for socialization and we save money. When he is 3 1/2 I will consider putting him in parents day out which has structured preschool combined with some religious Ed as well. It will be 2xs a day and manageable to pay. The cost of preschool deters me but not from providing my DS with the similar things he would get in preschool. I looked up some of the curriculum for homeschooling and my son is doing really well. Not to mention that ds7 loves to read to his brother and he also joins in on the fun of teaching him new things! Just my opinion though.
 
DD9 never attended preschool. It was at a time when we were moving, had a little baby and the thought of running around dropping off/picking up was too much at the time. She had no problem adjusting socially or acedemically to kindergarten and beyond.

DD7 got screened by the school district at 3 years old and she qualified for the school per-k program. Still not sure what she was deficient in the got her into the program. Really think she qualified just because we have a small community and there are lots of slots to fill. So she attended per-k 5 half days a week, rode the bus, for two years and then into kindergarten. She was as well adjusted as my non-preschooled daughter.

DS3 will be attending the same school pre-k starting next school year. He had some speech delay and we had home therapy until he turned 3. At 3 he was screened by the school and did not have enough delay to qualify for pre-k right now but they will hold a spot for him in the fall. So he will go thrugh the school system 4 half days a week, transportation provided, costs what school registration fees are, usually around $80 for the year.

So I would recommend checking with your school districti to see if they have a program like this.
 
My DS was tested with our school district and qualified due to his speech, they told me he should be speaking more, he was shy back then now you should hear him I can't shut him up, but 3 years free (well I do pay taxes) preschool and busing. Also checkout your local high school some have preschool programs.
 
In our area the Church programs are pretty high. I have put DS4 in the park district since he was 2. He loves it.

DS2 will be going next year. 3 year old program 2 times a week and an hour and half. It is $800 for the whole year. Our park district lets us pay monthly. I "think" the balance is due in August.

For my older son I see signs up at the beginning of the month reminding to make monthly payment. So I am guessing it is pay as you go?? We just pay it when we sign up. We have been lucky to have the $$ around.


And TRUST me you will LOVE preschool as much as your child ;)
 
My kids went to park district preschool also. Didn't cost much. 2 days a week @ 3 and 3 days a week @ 4. 3 hours per day. I did it for the socialization aspect as well.
