My first grader loves to run-so we joke when he is running that I am timing him--that brought up a good question my patrols asked me
If I said
On your mark---which foot is forward--your right or your left?
I told them I would ask my coupon group and facebook group--they could ask their friends and we would graph which one has more votes and why

What is funny--I use to run track and I am right handed--
So Daniel started with his left foot and is right handed--that sparked me to think--I asked my patrols-they all started with their left--just like Daniel and they are right handed
So--we asked everyone that crossed---so far 8 left foot---6 right foot--all are right handed
Those that did left--were runners and said you use the right which is your strong foot to kick off and get you going-you want your strongest foot in the back
I use to do quite well in track--and I assumed I did right foot first--but it has been so long
Now--though I would put right first--and I will say my first grader smokes me---of course it can't have anything to do with I have 46 years on him!!!!

Right foot...right handed.

I remember in Jr. High track in order to determine which foot when forward in the starting blocks the coaches said to have someone gently push you from behind and whichever leg you put forward first to stop yourself from falling would by your starting leg.

I am a righty. I would put my left foot forward so that I could push off with my right (stronger) leg. But what do I know? :9:

HI

I am a school crossing guard--the fifth graders are my safety patrols. Since I have a very odd crossing--where I am no where near the crossing to the school--while I walk up and cross the busy major street--I have patrols to hold any kids that come to the crossing-until I get there

Most that crossed today-said the same thing about-you want your stronger leg to be the push off leg and not the leg in front-
It has been fun seeing all the responses from here and facebook.
I do remember too about pushing and seeing which you put forth would be the starting block one
I ran track and field-but I did not like the starting block so I kept up without it (they were optional--yes I am that old!!)

I used to run track too. At a running camp, we learned a technique to determine which foot should go in the back in the starting blocks. If you stand still and someone pushes you, which foot do you step with to catch your balance? I automatically step with my left. So I consider myself right-handed and left-footed.....
