I don't want him gone because he's a great coach.

That said, I'd fully support Benson if he fired every coach who knew about it and didn't step in. I think Payton stays but Loomis (the GM) gets fired.

Personally, I think Peyton is going to go too. I mean come on, he's the head coach. How could he not know this has been going on with HIS team for the past THREE years?

That's an awfully big pill of denial to expect people to swallow.

He's not denying it as far as I know.

Its a hard thing to do if you were in Payton's position. I mean its your team and your responsible to control it but when you're friends with these other coaches its hard to discipline or fire these people as well. Who knows what was going through his head.

With the fact that a football team is considered a family of sorts, it makes you wonder who was angry enough to even talk and expose all this in the first place.

But the fact that he isn't coming forward about any of this is speaking volumes on his character. Everyone is saying "he knew "aspects", but not everything". Which I find to personally be B.S.

Every good lawyer will tell you that if you're in trouble, don't come out and talk about it until you're asked by someone who matters. Has the NFL publicly asked Payton about it? If they had asked him publicly about it would they expect him to respond publicly? The answer to both of those is no. The NFL would actually probably prefer that Payton keep his mouth shut to the media until all of this is taken care of.

Just because Payton didn't issue an idiotic press release like Gregg doesn't mean anything. You're basing your opinion about someone on news stories that are 99% speculation, nobody outside of a few NFL head guys and some of the Saints staff know the whole story

I definitely do not think his job is in jeopardy. Every team does some form of this, it's not just Williams and the Saints. He did it with the Redskins, and the Saints. It is the goal of football for defenses to try to hurt the other team's QB or star player. That means they will probably win the game. So for the Saint's to fire Peyton, that would just be wrong.

Well the owner has said he supports both Payton and Loomis so as of now they seem safe but it really depends on the investigation. He is a **** good coach and I agree that you don't say anything until asked; anyone who has ever been arrested can tell you that, lol.

I wouldn't think his job is in jeopardy either. The NFL has done some very bold things in the past, but to remove a coach from his position because of knowledge of a pay for play system is pretty extreme. The Saints will probably be fined heavily and lose draft picks at the most.

It's not pay for play, its pay for pain. And in this case removing a coach could be an option just because of everything the NFL has done in regards to concussions and the heat they have been taking.

I don't think they will force the Saints to fire him because then that is putting him on a blacklist that will never allow him to coach again, but they might strongly encourage his removal.

New Orleans Saints coach Sean Payton and general manager Mickey Loomis issued a joint statement on the bounty scandal:

We acknowledge that the violations disclosed by the NFL during their investigation of our club happened under our watch. We take full responsibility.

This has brought undue hardship on Mr. Benson, who had nothing to do with this activity. He has been nothing but supportive and for that we both apologize to him.

These are serious violations and we understand the negative impact it has had on our game. Both of us have made it clear within our organization that this will never happen again, and make that same promise to the NFL and most importantly to all of our fans.

Maybe some people shouldn't have jumped to conclusions about Loomis and Payton?

Definitely a great coach! All of the saints games that were lost, were not lost because of coaching issues.
I mean, the Saints are still that crazy team, all black that are winning most of the time

I don't know about that. A good portion of the games that were lost, we ONLY lost due to coaching issues. :dunno:

It sounds like he is safe, the owner has given him his full vote of confidence. It's not like the league can make that call either so he will definatly be back next year.

I don't think that he will be fired, even though he and Loomis probably should be. Reason being, that shiny trophy is only two years old and, rightly or wrongly, that still carries a lot of weight in this league. I think Benson would be totally justified in firing Payton and Loomis both, especially considering that his doing nothing could be construed as complicit approval (whether true or not) of the bounty program.

Besides the decision having to do with Sean Payton, what type of punishment do you think the league will bring down? It seems like it has to be multiple draft picks and a hefty fine, especially since everyone seems to be saying it will be harsher than spygate.

My guess:

2012 2nd round pick
2013 1st round pick
Gregg Williams 8 game suspension w/ $750,000 fine
Sean Payton 4 game suspension w/ $500,000 fine
Vilma 8-16 game suspension
Other players implicated 4-8 game suspension
