Someone PLEASE help me understand this

I had cramping & spotting during the first couple months I was pregnant with my DD. I was 17. I was terrified, but did nothing, because I was terrified. Come to find out that *some* spotting or *some* cramping is sometimes normal. (Baby is 17 now.)

Piece of mind is worth a lot, I hope you go for a second opinion. Whatever they tell you is probably not going to be worse than what you're going through now. :huggy:

We're on the phone now, she just figured out that it was the day of her orientation at McDonald's, which was September 23rd.

So I was just playing around with the calculator, she says the "week of" the 12th, or the week of the 19th. If i put in a first day of last period of 9/22, the calculation comes out to be 6 wks & 5 days (1 day later then yesterday's ultrasound measurement). Hmmmm...idk...

That sounds right. The OB will normally get a patient to come in every 2-3 days to check numbers. You should have your answer in a few days or so. If the numbers go up, it "should" be a sign of a healthy pregnancy. If not, they should discuss options. Many times an unhealthy pregnancy will result in a miscarriage on its own/expelled by the body naturally. And if that happens no meds are usually required. If not, meds and or DandC will be discussed. Those are the 3 things that I can think of.

I agree with everyone else!! If HCG is rising, do NOT D&C, go for a second opinion!

Besides, what would the harm be of waiting another week or two for confirmation of no heartbeat?

This is my personal opinion...if they do determine that she is having a miscarriage, I would wait wait wait to have a natural miscarriage until the doctor says that for her health and safety she should get a D&C. D&C's are safe, but they can cause scar tissue which can (sometimes) cause problems down the road when trying to get pregnant. I know that people have D&C's all of the time, but if it's not completely necessary, let the body do it's job. Best of luck to you guys!!

I would wait IC2 or get another opinion. When I miscarried, my last draw of HCG was down to 17. IMO, I think those HCG levels are very high for a miscarriage. I don't want to give false hope either. :huggy:

I'm with you, Brooke!! I would not want anyone to get a D&C. They only give those if the body doesn't naturally expel for some reason. I hope it works out as children are a real blessing.

I've had 2 miscarriages and the second time there was a sac and nothing in it. I think called a blighted ovum. Your levels rise cause the body thinks your pregnant but not a viable pregnancy. I would def. get another opinion or you will always wonder. I also did not have d & C with that one. Much easier and less stressful.

No matter what happens, everything will get better it just takes time.

I love all of you

I feel like I'm losing my mind! It just doesn't "feel" right to me kwim? I've read so much (I know the internet is a dangerous place) that indicates this happens a lot and it turns out that the very next ultrasound they find a heartbeat. If they were staying the same or dropping I would be able to "make my peace" with it. But when they are rising, I feel like there is at least a chance they just can't find the little pea pod. They are only human after all. And they were "wrong" about the size of the sac on Friday, so that doesn't give me much confidence in their u/s abilities.

We have an appointment on Saturday at 8:30 for a second opinion.

With my last pregnancy my numbers kept rising exactly as they were supposed to. Doubling in the early weeks and then continuing to rise slower, but steady in the later weeks. The gestational sac kept growing, although it was growing slower than it was supposed to and the egg sac was larger than it was supposed to be. I was 100% sure of the conception date, so I knew where I should be and the doctor's office wanted to wait until 9 weeks without seeing a heartbeat before performing a D&C. Since the HCG was still rising and everything (except the fetus) was still growing they did recommend the D&C as they had no idea when my body would clue in that the fetus wasn't viable.

The one advantage to the D&C is being able to do genetic testing. They did test that fetus and it had a genetic abnormality that was incompatible with life. Knowing that eased my heart and reassured me I made the correct decision.

As others have said, get as many opinions as you need and take the time you need to make a decision that rests easily in your heart. If it is a missed miscarriage her body will eventually recognize this and correct.

I agree Joy. Wait for a second opinion.

I don' wait to scare you, but I feel that you need to know......

In my case I had 4 miscarriages and they had to do a DNC everytime. I finally have my miracle child (who is 11 now) and I have never been able to have another baby. I have never even be able to get pregant again.

I thank God everyday for my son!!! I hope all comes out good for your baby and her baby. :huggy:

With my miscarriage I started bleeding first. Had an ultrasound at 6w3d and there was nothing there, not even a sac. 2 blood draws 48 hours apart showed numbers dropping. Had to continue to do blood draws until numbers were down to zero.

I've had cramping in the first trimester with all my pregnancies. Especially with her first it's normal, just everything stretching. I've also had bleeding in the first trimester with 2 out of 3. I had to be put on progesterone supplements this time, and even though I was bleeding Dr would not do an ultrasound until 7 weeks. 7 week ultrasound showed a healthy heartbeat.

First :huggy: to you.

I would avoid a D&C for as long as possible. I have never experienced one, but have heard they are painful and can cause problems as others have mentioned with scar tissue. From what I can remember when I went for my first obgyn appointments I was told that they may not hear a heartbeat and not to worry. I was further than 8 weeks with my second and my first I was much further because I didn't know I was pregnant for a few months.

My sister went to have a ultrasound to find out gender I believe or at least later than 8 weeks and they tech could not find the baby. The dr couldn't either. They do make mistakes. If the numbers are rising I would let nature take is course so to speak.

I have nothing to offer in the way of medical advice, just my prayers and well wishes :huggy:

Ok, not that I know anything about anything, but....IF there were something wrong, wouldn't her body "do it's job" and take care of things on it's own???

With all the confusion as to dates and what have you, I would definitely wait. Also, our bodies aren't perfect. Just because she had her period on XX date, does NOT mean she ovulated when she was "supposed" to.

When I found out I was pregnant with my DD2, I knew when my period was, when we DTD and all that. My doctor won't even see me until I'm 8 weeks, so I scheduled my appointment, went in. TEENY TINY BABY was SIX WEEKS. Yeah...nature has issues.

Not to give false hope or anything like that, but don't rush it. You never know.

Also, was it an internal U/S or just an external? An internal would give a better picture.

Good luck! I hope it all works out!
