I've come to the conclusion that computer hardware has a destruct sequence built into them secretly so they expire after a certain time, so as to allow the suppliers of these components to make a living by selling you a new one. Hermie, how old is the drive? You might be able to get a warranty replacement. I'm sorry that you had hard drive problems. It's never fun, as I have been there, myself. Do call up the company and try to get a warranty replacement...it'll cost you the shipping to return the drive...that's it.

As the former backup department manager for a Wall St. firm, I can't stress the importance of backups enough.
It's gotten much easier for home users nowadays. The easiest thing right now is to use Ghost to burn images directly to CD-R. Once a week is sufficient for most people's home computers.
In the event of a disaster, just replace the hard drive, boot with the CD-R, and the image is automatically restored to your drive.

Hehehe...well, JH, this HD was I think an old one that my bf had been using but didn't need anymore (almost my whole computer is made of "spare parts" these days
) Anyway, the one I had sitting around is a Samsung 1.2 Gig, which isn't all that reliable, but hopefully will hold me over till I get a new job and then the $150 or so for a new drive will be inconsequential.
DD: sigh...I am not so good about backing up, except for my Microsoft Money files. Part of the problem is I don't have any high-volume media for my computer. Maybe my next purchase post-job should be a CD burner. (Yeah, then make my bf jealous because his burner is only 2X...)
Considering that you can find good 8x burners for about $100, there's really no reason not to.
In the interim, you could always pop an image onto another drive in the house.
If you have machines networked together, you could always save the images somewhere on the network.

Well, the good news is that very little of what's on my hard drive is of vital importance. I don't use my computer for much other than Internet, so my finances and taxes are really the only REALLY important stuff. My job hunting files are there too, other than that everything can either be replaced or forgotten about
But my there's now a copy of everything on my hard drive, on another machine on our lovely home network...
I used to do regular backups, until I realized I really dont have that much vital information. Its mostly stored on an external Jaz disk or in an email message on an external server. As for the system software, its nearly faster to just reinstall from scratch, especially when your system behaves oddly. But I must say, Ghost owns.
Well, the rebuild is in process (getting Windows 2000 also)--checking the soup from a different computer... Actually our home network server, so I'm using up all the bandwidth *snark*
With Ghost, you don't have to reinstall anything. Just make a bootable CD, pop it in your drive, turn on your computer, and wait.
Once it gets running, run out and take care of some errands, and when you get back, your system is EXACTLY the same as it was when you made the image.
It really doesn't get any easier than that.

Well, the thing of it is, I'm going to have to purchase a new hard drive relatively soon. Now the question is, should I just get a whole new computer....hmmmmmmmmmmmmm, not sure on that one yet. This one is pretty old though...Got it in early '96 and have been upgrading it from a computer store that was giving me free equipment that was too obsolete to sell, but better than what I had
Don't have that connection anymore so maybe I oughta bite the bullet.
Hmmm, 4 years..it may be times, but they aren't cheap. Depends on what you use it for. The one I got in Feb '96 is still going strong. I've pretty much retired it to e-mail/web duties, but it's not a bad machine.
What's your specs on the current machine.
