They aren't storing up for the winter. They don't dig holes and hide nuts like squirrels do.

They hibernate ..... they dig tunnels ..... all over ..... and weaken the retaining wall timbers. They dig all over. :gah: They're not storing stuff for winter in my pots. They're just digging and killing all my plants. :surrender:

Aunt Bea loves her garden. She wouldn't wanna see it destroyed .... or the structures around her house here in (not quite) Mayberry :pout:
 
I was just talking with one of the guys at work this morning about chipmunks. He said he's always had one or two in his backyard but this year there was some sort of chipmunk population explosion. He said he set up a trap and managed to catch 14 of them. (I have no idea what he did with them but I'm guessing it wasn't pretty.)

He also told me about a groundhog that used to live on his property. Said the groundhog was fine for a few years but then it started digging right under some sort of footpath he had. Somehow it managed to destroy the bridge and it cost the groundhog it's life and my co-worker a few thousands of dollars to rebuild it.

I hear ya Cookiemom. The squirrels were busy this morning attempting to collect winter storage. They then attempt to run across my lawn, dig a hole and plant something or another. All the while digging right next to plants. well, crap! So me and the dog sat outside over an hour chasing the little sob's off.


Just to clarify, the dog was chasing squirrels, I was NOT! :giggles:
 
We had a bad chipmunk problem at our old house. My DH decided to shoot them with a BB gun but one Saturday when he was out back on chipmunk duty he didn't realize that DS5 (at the time) was watching through the sliding glass doors. DS was so upset that Dad was KILLING chipmunks. That was not a fun thing to attempt to explain to a 5 year old.
 
It's kinda the same here, Joan! Chipmunk explosion! I used to catch and relocate them. It took a lot of time, not to mention the cost of gas these days. A couple/three years ago, I caught a bunch and got the population down some. It seems like their numbers have EXPLODED this year :gah: I've got about 20 biggish pots out there and ALL of them have dead/dying plants and piles of dirt all over just cause of all the digging.... there are PLENTY of acorns out there .... lots of oak trees ..... the digging is just destructive.
 
They dig lots of places.... that would be a LOT of chili powder :lol:
 
If anyone knows how to discourage them, I'd love to hear it. I am overrun with them too and they destroyed my garage door liner (where the door hits the ground) so that has to be replaced. Wish the neighborhood fox would come back and cut down the population a little...

but if that doesn't work , there's this method...

....... I read here about using a 5 gallon bucket chipmunk swimming pool. I have had much better luck with this method. Whenever I feel that I am being overrun with chipmunks this method works quickly. I average 4 chipmunks a day and once got 8 in a day.
The swimming pool is a five gallon bucket half full of water with the surface covered in sunflower seeds (they float). There is a diving board that is a 1 by 6 board that has some seeds sprinkled on it. The chipmunk eats the seeds on the board gets to the end and dives into the sunflower seed. Unfortunately he can't swim. I don't mind the holes in the flower beds as much as the tunnels dug around my foundation and under my concrete walks.
