Using an analytic service?

When you are running a website it is always advised to have some kind of analytics service running in the background to know just how many views you're getting from visitors reading your content. There seem to be quite a few out there, the most popular being Google Analytics.

Do you use an anlytics service? If so, why do you record how many views you get? Do you use it as a metric for advertising of do you just enjoy seeing how many times people have visited? I am also interested to know which service people use as well.

We self host Matomo and use that. No we do not use it as an advertising metric.

The only analytics service I know of is Google Analytics because it seems to be the best and most popular option to use. There are probably others but because of Google's business model it means they can offer it for free whereas other services probably won't be.
