My network currently consists of the following:
Win2k Server serving dial-up connection via ICS
Win2k Pro box that I use as my workstation
WinME box that my girlfriend uses
various other machines connected for no apparent reason
Up until today, everything had been working fine.
The dial-up connection had been connected for about 31 hours, and I suddenly couldn't connect to Alien Soup. I couldn't even ping the site. I'd get a Host Unknown, meaning that there was no DNS resolution. However, I could ping Alien Soup from the server.
Keep in mind that no configuration changes or reboots had taken place. One hour, I was able to DNS resolve www.aliensoup.com, the next hour, I couldn't.
Also keep in mind that I'm able to get DNS resolution for every website other than Alien Soup, as well as email, telnet, and Usenet. IOW, this is only happening with Alien Soup. It's like the Pro box will no longer check DNS for Alien Soup.
Upon manually setting my local network settings on the Win2k Pro box to use my ISPs DNS servers for DNS instead of getting the DNS settings via DHCP, it fixed the problem. But does anyone have any idea why it would have spontaneously broken like that?
